Can anyone recommend textbooks/revision guides for KS3?

Specifically in Science, History & Geography...

I have seen the CGP ones recommended on old threads but they seem to be several years old & I am worried they will be out of date (seem to recall the science curriculum in particular changed a couple of years ago?)

I have finally realised that textbooks are out of favour in secondary schools - I have concerns about my dd's progress in these subjects but without a textbook I can't see how I can give her additional support at home...

Speak to your child's teachers as they will be able to tell you what they are studying and how they are studying. What are your concerns? There are no sats style assessments at ks3 anymore, for the time being teachers will assess using APP.

I did ask got the school & got an unclear message suggesting some science ones but wanted other opinions!

Jetgirl, my concerns are that:

In History & Geography she was assessed as 5a around this time of year in Y7 - her recent report shows 6c, so only minimal progression in two years. (She is Y9 now). Everything I have read or been told by the school suggests she should be comfortably working within level 7 by now..
I have raised this with the school several times within the past year but can't get a straight answer as to what the problem might be.

She is doing well in all other subjects (so not an ability issue I think) & they don't seem to think there is an issue with her effort...

In science she was disappointed in her pre-Christmas assessment results & has said that they sometimes get set test questions that they haven't covered in class....

Err could you explain that one again pixie?! How is that then fair if the grade in a test determines whether a child is allowed to do triple science for GCSE for example? Fair enough if it's just a little assessment to see how much the class knows already....

Before you buy any revision guides, you need to establish exactly which examinatin boards your child is taking in which subject and also which specification.

For example (this is a made up example) for History, it might be exam board AQA specification D. Until you are sure of exactly what they are taking it's not worth buying any books. When you are sure, you can then order books and see what has been and what has not been covered so far and work on what your child still needs to know.

There are usually subject books and revision guides issued by various publishers and all available on Amazon.

My son used hardly any of his class notes (his is dyslexic and I couldn't test him from them as they were too difficult to read) and got 8A* for his GCSEs. I spent about £100 on books from Amazon and it was money well spent! (he's 22 now)

I should also say that you need to ask the school for the specifications/boards if your child is not able to tell you.

students often claim that stuff hasn't been covered in class, then when you go through their own exercise books and point out the relevant bits the reply is "oh yeah, i forgot about that!"

Definitely check with the school but CGP are good, just check ou have the latest versions.
