GCSE vs. Standard Grades/Intermediates

Hi,

does anyone have any experience (them or their DCs) of both these systems?

Having done S-grades myself I find the discussions about GCSEs quite alien.

For instance, for S-grades pupils do 6-8 subjects but people seem to do 10-12 GCSEs. That seems like an awful lot of subjects to me, do puplis sit lots of 'filler' exams in non-academic subjects or something?

Also in terms of grading, is a Grade 1 the equivalent of an A or an A* at GCSE?

Does anyone think one system is better then another or more suitable for certain kinds of DCs? Where we live we can choose between schools that offer either one or the other system.
