DS going into year 10 has been doing his OCR since beginning of year9. He is complainig all he is doing is designing web sites, which he finds boring. Should they be covering things like databases etc

They will. The corse covers lots of different things. At the moment it sounds like the school is trying to do one of the more intersting modules but, of course, what is interetsing to some is boring to others. Stick with it. They should do databases, spreadsheets, desktop publishing etc.

All depends which modules they are doing in their OCR ...

DS isn't being forthcoming about what modules he has done. He was just having a moan about IT (a subject he normally loves and has won school prizes before in the past) There are a few other issues with computers not working which we are going to query when they go back in september.

I'm surprised he hasn't finished a module yet - maybe its the amount of curriculum time. The reason I say it, is that my daughter is also going into year 10 and will be doing OCR Nationals to level 2 in one year! Granted she will have 5 lessons a week - but I would have thought if he's been properly doing it all of year 9 they'd have at least finished one unit! I would have a word after the summer break - see where he is on the syllabus.

He only has 2 lessons a week and it's a compulsary subject for year 10, but he has so many other subjects I can't see them doing any more this year. His report in may said his coursework looks promising and he should have no problem in getting a distinction.

I will ask for clarification of what is going on in September.

I teach ocr nationals - the first unit which is compulsory is the traditional IT stuff, spreadsheets, databases etc
then the teacher will pick the subsequent units which may be webdesign, games design etc

"There are a few other issues with computers not working which we are going to query when they go back in september."

School pcs suffer a lot of abuse through the year, I would be surprised if more than 90% worked after the first 2 months.
