Where can I find the list of axed UofE courses?

Does anyone know where I could find a list of the axed UofE courses and are they axed from 2027/28 or can you still apply for 2027/28? I’m too tight to buy the Herald which has the list.

I wasn’t aware of this but dd1 has a friend due to start one of these courses (or perhaps he started this week?)

will he be able to complete his degree? Will they be making lots of staff redundant? How sad for all.

Almost all of these programmes are “and” programmes, so students are taking courses from more than one discipline. Having lots of “and” course makes timetabling very complicated. There are possibly only a very small number of students on a programme but they will constrain the timetable for everyone studying both subjects. So if you have 10 German and xxx degree programs it becomes very difficult to produce a practical timetable. Students will still (I assume) have the ability to study outside their core subject in first and second year so there will be a fair amount of scope for broad studies.

Pretty depressing that one of the major Scottish unis is scrapping its Celtic (i.e. Gaelic) course.

There is still Celtic with Scottish Ethnology which has language options.

There's stand alone degrees such as Religious Studies, and also the BD in Divinity which are going - I wonder what New College will have left in it

I was thinking that. Maybe they’ll sell the whole New College campus.The uni doesn’t have much choice really. They’re being underfunded by the state, the money they’re getting from rUK students has been frozen for years while inflation has been soaring, and income from overseas students is not what it was. They really don’t have any choice, which the union of course fails to understand. I wonder where the union thinks the uni can whip the money from to keep courses going that aren’t financially viable?

Although not the ECA courses - Performance Costume, Textiles and Jewellery and Silversmithing. All very well regarded stand alone courses - such a loss.

University of Edinburgh has announced the closure of more than 90 degree programmes to new applicants. The cuts are part of an ongoing restructuring to tackle a £140 million budget savings target
Affected courses will be "taught out," meaning current students can finish their degrees, but no new admissions or transfers will be accepted.
Major Departments Affected
The vast majority of the closures impact the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (CAHSS):

• School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures (LLC): The hardest hit department, losing 48 programmes.
• School of Divinity: 10 programmes are closing,
• Edinburgh College of Art (ECA): 5 programmes are closing,
• Edinburgh Law School: 4 programmes are closing,
• Business School: 3 programmes are closing,
• School of History, Classics and Archaeology: 3 programmes are closing.
• School of Economics: 1 programme is closing.

Additional and Previous Cuts

• Medical School: 13 postgraduate courses at the Edinburgh Medical School are also slated for closure or to be taught out.

Fallout and Backlash The scale of the cuts has been heavily criticized by staff as "academic vandalism". In response to the closures and the potential for 1,800 job losses, the University and College Union (UCU) has called for a 25-day continuous strike running from late September through October 2026

The Church of Scotland made a decision earlier this year that it would work with one training institute only (previously candidates were spread across Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, St Andrews and UHI's Highland Theological College in Dingwall, sometimes with only one candidate in a particular institution). The Church of Scotland opted to work with Trinity College at Glasgow University, so the numbers enrolling for New College's BD going forward would make the course unviable (Trinity College already had 40% of the candidates). The process for this decision started in 2019 so it's not a sudden decision.

The degree I did (Scottish Ethnology) is being scrapped. I Feel quite sad about it. I half expected it to be on the list though if I’m honest, it’s so niche. But I did wonder if the fact it was SO niche, that it might be saved….if that makes sense. All the professors when I was there (c1994) were pretty ancient (and lovely and so invested in their subjects, as you’d expect) and I’m not sure if there would be a lot of people stepping into their roles?

Programme cuts and course cuts aren't the same thing. A lot of the programme cuts are about simplifying options and a lot of the course cuts are about under-registration.

It's very unclear what the union actually wants anyone to do - there are fewer students, less money, staff are more and more expensive and the government won't top up funding of Scottish students and doesn't have endless extra money for bailing anyone out. Obviously firing a few fancy people will help in a minor way, but the Uni is millions and millions of points over target and it's not sustainable.

Yes, really sad as all the grad show work in those subjects was amazing. My daughter was considering Performance Costume for next year.
