Thoughts on the SNP’s proposed P1 school bag scheme

What do you think about the SNP’s P1 bag idea?

I think the prototypes look ugly! My nephew down south got a school branded one from his local primary. It’s satchel style and looks smart. It’s not huge, fits his homework jotter, reading folder and water bottle.

I also think it’s pretty pointless! I’d rather have funded childcare from 9 months or strategies for teacher retention! 😭

Where i live the thought of kids getting dropped off to school in a BMW with a free bag they dont need makes my blood boil.
Meanwhile people are sleeping rough 5 miles away.

Maybe ScotGov should offer an adult box when you turn 18. Big enough to keep stuff in when you move, big enough to sleep in and when you're deid....

They are proposing giving them £200 instead. So they can buy their own choice if box or bag or a few weeks unsubsidised food.

Thanks that made me laugh out loud.

What's really happening

Today's article on Scottish schools.

It doesn't surprise me. Unfortunately, sorting this mess is way beyond the capabilities of the SNP, and they (and we) know it. Instead they form wee committees to tinker with trivia - I can only imagine how many person hours (and associated salary costs) went into deciding the design, colour and content of these school bags at the expense of actual outcomes improvement. It's heartbreaking actually - they have trashed this country with their utter incompetence.

The bags and their contents will be lost or sold before the October holidays. In the mean time, schools can’t afford to buy essentials due to budget cuts. It’s absolutely absurd and a waste of money. Put that money into the education budget and fund education properly

Before the October holidays? Half the contents will be missing by the end of the first day!

Probably! The pupils I teach at secondary can’t manage to transport a pencil from one class to the next. I know I’m lucky to afford it, but part of my child’s back to school prep is going and picking their school bag. They wouldn’t use the one I’ve seen the SNP propose giving out and we wouldn’t take it. Same reason we refused the baby box. It also draws attention to those who are struggling and opens up the child to ridicule. It shouldn’t, but we all know children can be cruel
