What do you think about the SNP’s P1 bag idea?

I think the prototypes look ugly! My nephew down south got a school branded one from his local primary. It’s satchel style and looks smart. It’s not huge, fits his homework jotter, reading folder and water bottle.

I also think it’s pretty pointless! I’d rather have funded childcare from 9 months or strategies for teacher retention! 😭

Most infant schools in England you have to have a "book bag". Its part of the standard uniform. No issues with everyone having the same bags as they are named.

I dont know why they should be given away for free by the SNP though, we have to pay for them!

Stupid idea. Makes the politicians delivering it feel great and gives them something to shout about for a relatively low outlay but it’s wasteful and patronising

I'm a primary teacher in Scotland, this is another stupid gimmick designed to make headlines. Schools are chronically underfunded both in terms of staffing and resources. The money could be better spent being given to schools to buy supplies. Every year teachers are forced to spend more and more of their own money on basic school supplies.

Practically it's a nightmare too, all bags and stationary looking the same. Many kids will get their own anyway so there will be a huge waste issue. A stupid idea all round!

Most schools I know (I work in one) will supply if children don't have one but the expectation is they will supply their own.

Yes. That is how it works with free stuff - it is free so people don’t want to miss out on something the government is giving, but then another to make up their own mind whether to use it once they have it.

While the blue is simply reflective of sectarian hatred.

It’s because it’s cheap and looks like they care about kids. All while they keep their heads in the sand about the appalling state of Scottish education

Why apply for something you don’t want?

Because you don’t know you don’t want the stuff until it comes. And then you take a look and don’t want it. That’s the way psychology works. It had things in like a complicated baby sling which no one would ever use. They’d buy the brand they want instead.

Unless they make this part of a school uniform and the only one you can use , these are just landfill .

Just like the computer tablets and bikes they promised all pupils it’s a ridiculous gimmick and the money could be spend on far better things.

I’m confused as at our school (in a relatively deprived area), they tell us never to send school supplies until they’re older. Everything is provided in school and kids can bring a pencil box if they like from p4 or so - but totally optional and plenty bring nothing
