Three days in Glasgow

We are staying in Strathbungo in September for 3 days - our first visit to Glasgow. I'd love some local recommendations for cafes and restaurants, if anyone has time and inclination? Lots online but I prefer personal opinions.

Paesano pizza cannot be beaten if you like a good pizza. Limited menu but amazing quality, there's one in the centre and one in the west end so you have options depending on where you are for the day. Lots of nice museums (Kelvin grove and burrell collection especially.) Istanbul cakes and baclava is a bit out of the way and not very well known but amazing cakes (on bridge street)

There’s a Paesano very close to Strathbungo too but you will be spoilt for choice with eating options close by. The Big Counter is excellent but maybe a bit niche. Cafe Strange Brew is amazing. Bramble is meant to be good but I haven’t been.

Ive no suggestions but a family member moved to Glasgow and I went on a very short visit and was blown away by the vibrant city and the lovely people.
Give us an update on where you go for when I return for a longer visit.

My son is moving there shortly to study for a doctorate so we'll probably be visiting more often, though he's looking at the suburbs north of the city as his placements will be in the Forth Valley. I will certainly report back. We had a holiday booked there five years ago but it was scuppered by Covid, so am really looking forward to it.

House for an Art Lover - we had a lovely walk and brunch there.

Strathbungo restaurants - lobo for small plates, little hoi an for Vietnamese (and reasonably priced), if you’re with kids then Dinis pizzeria is a nice family run alternative to paesano that’s very kid friendly.

Southside to do - tramway if there’s a good exhibition on. the Burrell collection is well worth a visit with a walk through Pollok park and down to Pollok house which is currently closed for restoration but the gardens are open.

Brunch at the Brooklyn Cafe on Minard Road - walking distance from Strathbungo

Qasba opposite little hoi an is also great for lunch, also heard lots of good things about Pakistani street food which I think is on the same street but never been. You’re spoiled for choice in strathbungo. Sunny acre is also a great little cafe as well as bramble, though you need to put your name down and wait at bramble even during the week.

it’s also worth a walk to the top of Queen’s Park for the view, battlefield and Mount Florida over the other side of Queen’s Park also have some good options for places to eat

All very good suggestions. Tramway is a great building with a lovely garden. Also home to Scottish Ballet. The cafe is a bit rubbish though. Pollock park has lots of highland cow calves atm, very cute. Queens park is even closer with many events at the bandstand over the summer, some free.

Will definitely do this as I grew up in a Minard Rd in London!

Watching with interest as DC is also a PhD student in Glasgow.

@CookingNonna he's actually studying at Edinburgh University but as his placements will be nearer Glasgow ( and take up the majority of the course) he'd prefer to live in that area. Just looking for a flat to rent now.

Brooklyn cafe is such a South side institution, you should definitely go!

I would add pastries & bakes from the Burnfield Bakery on Pollokshaws Rd, across the road from Lobo.

If you wander a bit further to Shawlands the Deanston Bakery does fantastic sourdough and bagels while Peacock’s on Battlefield Rd does great ice cream and usually has less of a queue than La Gelatessa - their Trash Panda flavour is knockout.

The Grind House coffee shop on Darnley Street is great and easily combined with a visit to the Tramway.

Queens Park is lovely as is Maxwell Park and yes a visit to the Burrell and Pollok Park. You'll be close to Pollokshaws Road for buses into the City Centre or for trains from Queens Park Station.

Kelvingrove Art Gallery is good also the Transport Museum is worth visiting.

If you want Italian takeaway you cant beat Piatto in shawlands, just up the road from strathbungo

If you go into the city centre, I really like Cafe Andaluz for tapas.

YES! Cafe Strange Brew, food is amazing and so reasonable.

No reservations, call in, leave them your number and have a wander until they text you a table is ready.

We also enjoy a walk to Pollock Park and brunch in the modern, spacious cafe. Very peaceful (in terms of time!).

cibo on Victoria Road gets brilliant reviews, you’d need to book though, it’s very busy. Also Mi Chai is very good - also Victoria Rd.

Someone mentioned Bramble. I've been once for cake and tea. Lovely but pricey. Pollok Park and the Burrell Collection are a must since you are staying southside and hopefully you will see the highland cows in Pollok Park. The cafe in the Burrell is nice for coffee and cake or for lunch.
