I actually do live in the city but am rarely in town for just a coffee and cake. Could recommend lots of local places but not city centre...

Meeting a friend tomorrow late afternoon. Where's good? (Not Starbucks or Costa). Preferably 5 minutes from George Square.

Does it need to be an independent place? I usually just go to the John Lewis cafe.

LaliqueSaltGrinder · 27/06/2026 21:39

As long as the cake is good.

I don’t rate JL for cake or coffee.

Riverhill coffee bar on Gordon St was a sore loss last year, I have been looking for a solid replacement go to.

Lab Espresso for a Cannoli.
Singl-end merchant city are good.
If you are happy to take out Dorky French is sublime.

Tantrum donuts...as long as you like donuts!

Through the House on High Street or Outlier on London Rd. Maybe a tiny but far, but very central Glasgow is light on good cafes. Laboratorio Espresso as PP mentioned is good for coffee, less so for cake IMO. Social Bite used to be good but I haven't been for a while.

Also too late, but if you are partial to a meringue, try the Willow Tea Rooms on BuchanStreet. The meringues are absolutely enormous!

Do tell where you ended up and what you thought of it.

Also late, but the Wild Olive Tree is a social enterprise cafe and perfect for that sort of meeting

ExcellentCat · 05/07/2026 07:38

Social bite is still nice! And the one in St George’s Tron was nice, but I haven’t been for quite a long time.

ChasingRainbow5 · 05/07/2026 07:42

Not at all useful here but I really hope Gordon Street Coffee manages to reopen eventually, they have great coffee and cake.

We ended up in Social Bite. The coffee is very good. Cake not awful.
