Edinburgh solo midweek lunch

I have the joy of an afternoon in Edinburgh myself this week, train arrives at midday and I have until 6pm to entertain myself. I was going to browse St James Quarter but I don’t really need anything and so thought I’d have a wander instead and have a relaxing lunch, pub and read my book.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a restaurant and a pub please? Somewhere that’s OK for eating alone. I am not a fussy eater! Will be in the city centre but happy to wander a bit as I’ll have a good 6 hours.

Not a restaurant, but the cafe in the Portrait Gallery is very nice. I have lunched there solo.

Amarone. Is a lovely Italian restaurant. Good prices, lovely food and beautiful restaurant. There is section with stools where people dine alone, some have laptops working etc

My first choice would be the Palmerston. It has a pub vibe and I love their frequently changing menu. You could get off the train at Haymarket, it's less than 5 minutes walk from there.

Hawksmoor do a good lunchtime fixed price menu which is good value or a short walk downhill to The Ox on Broughton Street is very good pub grub.

Why would the Op want to sit in a special section?
I'd probably just wander along the royal mile, find somewhere nice down a close maybe. Should be nice since it's not the festival!

Try The Doric on Market Street, both a lovely little relaxed restaurant and bar food upstairs, they do an excellent Cullen Skink.

The Fruit Market Gallery next to Waverley.
