Scotland under Green Party leadership - your thoughts?

What would it be like?

I’m envisaging governance by people the majority of whom have never worked outside Scottish politics.

Dark unsafe streets - street lights and flood lighting of our historic buildings a waste of energy.

People openly shooting up on street corners - those not occupied by prostitutes. No prisons except for what they deem ‘violent crimes’, so presumably burglars and drug pushers free to ply their trade; shoplifting effectively decriminalised leading to fewer shops and choice - perhaps major chains pulling out.

The decamping over the Border of the higher rate taxpayers who don’t work for the state resulting in huge loss of tax revenue. Same for large companies. Presumably therefore massive increases in public borrowing?

Am I a pessimist?

From page p132 of the Scottish Greens Manifesto -

https://greens.scot/sites/default/files/public/Scottish%20Greens%20Manifesto.pdf

'Provide direct support to the Tibetan Government-in-exile, such as financial support
and digital record keeping, recognising their role as the legitimate democratic representatives of the Tibetan people.'

(Edited to add that I should have clarified that I became aware of it in their general manifestos rather than it having been on the news programme you were watching)

Edited

Scotland versus China. A hard one to call.

@FunnyOrca Are you seriously suggesting that an SNP/Green coalition would be able to make a success of closing all our prisons and legalising Class A drugs and prostitution? They can't even build a ferry. Let's focus on the disasters that are the Scottish education system and the Scottish NHS, shall we? I note that the Greens want to abolish exams. Then maybe they'll move on to abolishing reading and writing. We're certainly heading in that direction.

N post was perhaps not clear enough. My point was that they have these ideas that are not awful, but they are not going to be able to enact them. Part of the reason the Greens do such pie in the sky manifestos is because they will never have to follow through… much like Lib Dems and tuition fees down south…

As you say, the Lib Dems didn't expect to be in power. Once they got into power in alliance with the Tories they quickly ditched their free university policy. But the Greens in Scotland have until very recently been in power in alliance with the SNP, and they probably expect that to happen again this time round - there is at least a strong chance that that is what will happen. Yet they're coming out with these ludicrous policies which there is no chance in hell of them and the SNP implementing successfully.

But they aren’t going to be implemented at all. I’m not scared of them doing it badly, I’m scared of more of the current stagnation the SNP have created.

It would be even worse than it is under the SNP

WaverleyOwl · 28/04/2026 21:14

Apologies as I've not read everything, but my only concern is getting rid of SNP.

I might have to hold my nose and vote for labour in my constituency.

I think that we should all think on what we don't want, and vote accordingly, rather than just voting for the party we want.

Vote tactically to stop the SNP.

If stopping the SNP is your priority, vote tactically in this election.

I agree, @WaverleyOwl , and that tactical voting thing is handy!

Appalling. It’s astonishing the number of
perverts in the male politician ranks.

30-odd years ago this used to be the Tory domain but the SNP and Greens seem to have taken over the mantel now. Greens seem to have seen the antisemitism of the Labour hard left and the sleaziness of the Tories and thought it would be a great basis for a political party. Who votes for these dangerous idiots?

EvelynBeatrice · 03/05/2026 07:46

I remember a column a couple of years ago on here where we were discussing the possibility of 16 year old MSPs. I pointed out that no responsible parent would want their child exposed to or associating daily with a body of persons so full of embezzlers, perverts and a casual attitude to the misappropriation of public funds.

Yes, the stealing / personal use of large sums of other people's money by senior SNP politicians seems to be becoming almost a perk of the job. One example - Peter Murrell, living with his wife Nicola Sturgeon, is alleged to have embezzled £460K over 12 years, with purchases of a campervan, extremely expensive sports cars and lots of presents to wife and family.
But if you mention it to an SNP supporter: "But INDY!!".
Vicious male murderers sharing showers with women in the women's prison?
"But INDY!!".
Child sex abuse rife among organisations favoured by the SNP leadership?
"But INDY!!".

Nimonion · 03/05/2026 20:15

Perfect example of ‘Weesht for Indy wankers’.
