Steak pie, links or no links?

I'm a links person as it's what I was brought up with, Mum from Ayrshire.
Also what do you serve it with, I do leftover red cabbage from Christmas and greens of some sort, broccoli 🥦 this year, plus extra gravy, but no potatoes which might be controversial.
What do you do?

I always do it the way my gran did - a steak link per person ( cut up of course) added to the steak for the last hour of cooking.

Traditionally I suppose it was to bulk out the meat, but actually it adds great extra flavour.

Agreed, a few steak links mixed in for the extra flavour.

So are the sausages whole when they go in , or in pieces?

YellingAway · 31/12/2025 13:10

They were always in pieces and to flesh out the meat.

I don’t think that I’ve ever seen beef olives filled with mealy pudding or knew that they existed until now.

Oh they do and they're ace.
I honestly thought that was the only way they were made.
I'm late 50s .👍😋

I’ve only ever seen them with sausage meat and I’ve never even tried mealy pudding.

This is clearly regional. Which area are you from if I may ask?

Mum used to make beef olives for us when I was little. Always sausage wrapped in beef!

Chemenger · 31/12/2025 13:40

Beef olives were mealy pudding in Aberdeenshire when I was growing up. Here in the soft south they are made with sausage. I do prefer the mealy pudding ones.

Chemenger · 31/12/2025 13:42

Beef olives were our best school dinner, although lentil soup with a huge cheese biscuit came close.

(edited when i remembered the cheesy biscuits).

Thank you. That explains it.

WhineAndWine1 · 31/12/2025 14:29

Just steak in the pie here (Edinburgh) never had one with sausages in it before. Served on NYD with carrots and mash oh and Lentil soup to start

liveforsummer · 31/12/2025 14:46

Pie and chips - perfectly legitimate although I’d usually have mash with extra gravy. Maybe even a Yorkshire pudding or 2 if feeling particularly hungry. I’ve never had or seen a steak pie with sausage in 😅

RaraRachael · 31/12/2025 16:15

I'm in the NE and our local butcher does beef olives with mealie pudding, black pudding, haggis or sausagemeat filling.
Have to be served with mashed tatties, neeps and gravy.

weegielass · 31/12/2025 19:30

Any restaurant that served me a steak pie with links would get a complaint for false advertising. I'm not even joking. Fortunately, I have yet to encounter such a restaurant.
Going to MIL for NY dinner and she will very likely buy a steak pie that has the pastry separate - I mean who does that!

WhineAndWine1 · 31/12/2025 19:59

@weegielassi make stew with a lid (separate) rather than an actual pie. The puff pastry is the best bit.

WillowIvy · 01/01/2026 01:08

I’m from the Highlands and we’ve always had sausage in our steak pie. I think it was used to make the pie go further. Mealy pudding olives are fabulous, we had them on a Wednesday at my grannies 🥰

Samewrinklesnewname · 02/01/2026 13:18

I ended up making 2 steak pies, 1 with sausages (in whole) and 1 without
