Steak pie, links or no links?

I'm a links person as it's what I was brought up with, Mum from Ayrshire.
Also what do you serve it with, I do leftover red cabbage from Christmas and greens of some sort, broccoli 🥦 this year, plus extra gravy, but no potatoes which might be controversial.
What do you do?

I had veggie haggis a few weeks ago which went down well so might try that again.

We had a mushroom wellington on Christmas day so want something different at NY.

I will struggle with missing steak pie more than i did with turkey, it used to be my favourite dinner!

Sainsbury's vegetable pies are nice

Groovee · 28/12/2025 18:33

No links
either Roasties or Mash but sometimes chips.
Carrots, Broccoli or peas with ours.

Around 3, chocolate trifle and cheese for dessert.

No links here in Fife. I don't always do potatoes either. I've got a pie that serves 3-4 just for me and DH for NYD. Lots of lovely meat and pastry. Then carrots, peas and sprouts. If DH wants potatoes I will do some but for me it's all about the meat and pastry.

SnowDaysAndBadLays · 28/12/2025 19:04

Im a huge fan of the pastry, the crispy top and gravy soaked bottom 👌

I’ve been doing my pies wrong all these years! I don’t put pastry on the bottom 🤣. Mine are cooked in my MIL’s enamel pie dish with just puff pastry on top. I’m now questioning my steak pie making skills.

My Scottish husband loves a Speedies Steak pie from Bathgate or from the butchers in Boghall with Mash and tinned processed peas and extra gravy! Bloody delicious! Now we are in Wales he has perfected a blooody good homemade version…. No links…. 🤢🤢🤢.

I love when we visit and bring a few home for the freezers

isitmytime · 28/12/2025 19:39

Just a top crust here too, but the soggy underside of it from the gravy is food of the gods 🤣

That soggy bit is the best bit of steak pie. I refuse to have steak pie when we go to a pub for lunch or dinner because what you always get is stew with a bit of puff pastry that hasn’t been anywhere near the meat so it just turns into dust when you go to eat it. That’s not a pie.

Dearg · 28/12/2025 20:14

No links, bur definitely kidney.

My Mum’s had just heavenly flaky pastry on top, but DH needs shortcrust around the pie , flaky on top; in exchange for the kidney which he’s not keen on.
Mashed tatties, pies and possibly neeps or cabbage. Additional gravy.

Served on New Years Day.

Never had one with sausage in, but I am open to the idea.

Yes, that is what I meant by the bottom.
Steak pies should not have a pastry bottom.

YellingAway · 28/12/2025 20:28

On NYD with links, mash and roasties, carrots and parsnips. Love it!

TheCooperettesShingaLing · 28/12/2025 20:38

No links gads min

Buttery mash
Peas or broccoli

snoopyfanaccountant · 28/12/2025 20:46

I have a friend who initially trained as a butcher before moving to another career. His steak pie always includes links and I will respect his professionalism.

piefacedClique · 28/12/2025 21:16

They are like a Fray bentos pie on speed (one that actually includes meat!)

1reason · 28/12/2025 21:24

Never heard of Steak Pie with sausages, either lorne or link!
Do they go in the pie, on top of the pastry as a garnish or on the side ?
Always 1 January meal.
East coaster.

in the pie. Steak and links pie. Quinn's East Coast. Although my sister in law makes her own and I think we are going there.

Christmashatglee · 28/12/2025 21:37

I was definitely no links, could not understand the concept at all. What could a link bring to the party and they do not belong in a bloody pie. And then I bought a Malcom Allen with porkie pieces of joy, rapture.

clare8allthepies · 28/12/2025 22:12

We will be having a steak pie on NYD though I will have to do something different for my eldest who isn’t keen. I had no idea this was a thing until the first new year after we moved up to Scotland and saw people queueing down the street to get into the butchers on New Year’s Eve!

Links here. My mum used to add kidney sometimes cos my dad liked it.
Warning, this might send some over the edge...my friend has steak pie with chips and salad 🤮

Someone i know has salad and a side of tomatoes and mozzarella cheese with a steak pie. A quiche yeah but not a steak pie. That needs to be served with buttery mash, mushy peas, tons of gravy and mint sauce
