Steak pie, links or no links?

I'm a links person as it's what I was brought up with, Mum from Ayrshire.
Also what do you serve it with, I do leftover red cabbage from Christmas and greens of some sort, broccoli 🥦 this year, plus extra gravy, but no potatoes which might be controversial.
What do you do?

Definitely sausages in the steak pie, served with creamy mashed potatoes, peas and broccoli. Sticky toffee pudding for dessert with lots of toffee sauce, cream and/or ice cream. My kids would be bereft if I served anything else on NYD.

Its more traditional than turkey for Christmas.

Never heard of sausages in a steak pie but I wonder if it's a south of Scotland thing. I'm NE and it's always been roast beef for New Year dinner,

Someone i know has salad and a side of tomatoes and mozzarella cheese with a steak pie. A quiche yeah but not a steak pie. That needs to be served with buttery mash, mushy peas, tons of gravy and mint sauce

What is wrong with her?
Sheesh.

Links, roasties, peas and carrots. Puff pastry on top, no pastry underneath. Love a steak pie 🥧

My horrible ex bf had never heard of it either, in Aberdeen, apparently they had beef soup for NYD.

Links in steak pie ! Just thinking about it brings back memories of new years day at my grandparents house. Clyde coast if that helps identify a geographical split!

SnowDaysAndBadLays · 29/12/2025 16:45

I live on the Clyde coast now, town beginning with H.

We hail from the other side of the river then. I grew up near the big bridge! Family are from a bit further down but had a lovely view of the holy loch and the American Polaris base from their front room windows!

@SnowDaysAndBadLays no beef soup here but some locals make the abomination that is mince soup.

Can’t just be the south, I’m on the east coast! (And bought steak sausages today 😂)

RaraRachael · 29/12/2025 18:34

@SnowDaysAndBadLays I've never had it because I don't like mince but it looks like thin mince and gravy with some tatties and carrots.
Truly disgusting 😅

It probably is a weegie mink delight😉

As a native Glaswegian I vociferously object to such an idea. No self respecting Glaswegian would allow soggy sausages near their lovingly crafted steak pie.(Or my in case, near one purchased from a butcher, as I cannot be bothered to make one).

Was only teasing👍😁

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 29/12/2025 18:55

No sausages here, never heard of that! (From Glasgow but lived in Edinburgh for ages). We have ours with mash, greens, extra gravy. Usually on NYD.

Some things are much too serious to be teased about!

ThePerfectWeekend · 29/12/2025 19:01

Only read page one...I'm intrigued...on NYD you have steak pie served with maybe potatoes, veg...and sausages?

Vintagegoth · 29/12/2025 19:05

For many years there was much griping from my husband about the lack of "little sausages" in our new years day pie. Finally found some beef sausages in M&S that not only fit the bill, but are gluten free so I can have them too with my own sad little GF portion of pie. Apparently the inclusion of these new- found sausages now makes the pie taste like it did when he was a child in Ayrshire.

The sausages are cooked with the steak as part of the filling. And it needs to be served with mashed potatoes and mashed neeps. Or maybe some mushy peas

Exactly. We must hail from similar parts of Scotland with similar traditions 😀

Me too, Aberdeenshire.

As another native Glaswegian, I completely agree! Steak pie (NO SAUSAGES), boiled potatoes, mashed turnip and carrots on NYD. Followed by trifle. Anything else is just wrong 😋

RaraRachael · 29/12/2025 19:43

My mother used to make a lovely steak pie (no sausages) but she made sure everyone had the same amount of beef. She'd stand there counting the pieces out and rearranging them if somebody had bigger bits than somebody else.

The bloody thing was nearly cold before we got it!

1reason · 29/12/2025 20:01

OP , thanks for this fun thread!
I have just googled a few East coast towns/ cities butchers. Shocked to tell ya..loads of butchers do them!!
Might get one...just to try it, of course.
