Moving from England

Hi, can anyone advise me on what the situation in Scotland would be for housing benefit. I live with my parents and 3 kids and I’m looking for a property in England but some of the options are either too pricey or in places I don’t want to move to. I currently live and work in east mids and I’ve found a few rentals in Edinburgh in my price range. I know if I left work and went on housing benefit I’d get around £1000 towards renting but I dont know if it’s the same for Edinburgh or how much of a price difference it would be. Obviously I would have to leave work hence why I’m asking about housing benefit but I am looking to continue working either from home or else. Sorry if this is a silly question.!

The extra amount you get towards rent is capped in each area by each local authority so you would need to check the rules in that area. Also certain benefits no longer automatically transfer over to Scotland from England and need to be reapplied for so its worth checking that to

if Edinburgh is affordable where on earth have you been looking in England?? also, why would you move and leave a job only to rely on benefits?

Edinburgh affordable on benefits? There might be more to this than meets the eye.

MiddleAgedDread · 02/12/2025 16:21

also, if anywhere appears affordable in Edinburgh compared to living in the East Midlands, it's almost guaranteed to be an area you wouldn't choose to live in!

Edinburgh is an incredibly expensive place to live so I’d be surprised if this was correct.

Is the idea the £1000 would cover rent for somewhere for an adult and three children? This seems unlikely to find in Edinburgh.

Zooeymither · 06/12/2025 22:27

I have lived in both East Midlands and Edinburgh, and East Mids is a far cheaper place to live. I would not move to Edinburgh expecting it to be more affordable.

I live in Edinburgh. I really need a 3 bed but no way it’s an option. £1000 might cover a fortnight but not a monthly rent even in the less desirable areas 😅

Also housing benefit is no longer a thing. It’s covered by universal credit and you are expected to work

The maximum UC housing element paid in Edinburgh is £222.23 for a 2 bed or £316.44 weekly for a 3-bed house/flat. You need to remember that the UC cap (which you might be exempt from for a year if you have been earning enough in the past 12 months) is £1835 a month.so not much left over after rent is paid.

What has made you choose Edinburgh? It is an expensive place to live.
