Countryside areas to live not far from Glasgow

Thinking of moving from Edinburgh , closer to Glasgow for family reasons. I hate living in a busy polluted congested city. I would like to live somewhere with a good community, better weather ( hate the wind here) and lovely countryside but with things to do and groups to join . Moving with OH and we are both retired. Glasgow gets a lot of rain I know and I don’t want to live in the city itself. Maybe an hour to an hour and a half away. Looking to buy a three to four bed house with decent sized garden in good order .
We would still like to come into Edinburgh sometimes so decent transport links would be useful. We also travel down to W Sussex a couple of times a year so good train links are important.

The weather is better on the east than further west ? Including the wind ?

The answer really depends on your budget. Most of the central belt is within 90 minutes of Glasgow including most of Ayrshire and a good proportion of Stirlingshire.

Well where I live in South Ayrshire is very handy for Glasgow and is generally a pretty nice town with a community feel. But if you don't like wind then it's absolutely no use to you!
It's jokingly referred to locally as the windiest place in Scotland.

South Lanarkshire
Very handy for Glasgow
Lots of rain
Lots of wind

Nearly always pissing with rain when it’s clear blue skies in Edinburgh and the East coast.

Lanark has most of these good train links to glasgow/motherwell for southbound and handy for M74. Some gorgeous properties for sale along the Clyde valley.

My brother is in Ayrshire and we're on the east coast. I often find in the summer that he's sitting out in glorious sunshine and we're buried in the haar.
He's near Dundonald. Loves it there.

An hour and a half from Glasgow isn't going to be closer than Edinburgh, unless you want to be closer to a specific, far out suburb?

I'd move to Crieff or Dunblane for the lifestyle you describe though.

Killearn / Balfron.

Helensburgh/Rhu or Ayrshire would suit you. I do think you'll be disappointed if you hope for better weather though

Killearn / Balfron.

Or Fintry? Edinburgh is too windy for me now too even although I was brought up there.
