Hooray! The Festival is here!

Anybody fancy sharing their Fringe/ Festival recommendations here?
I went out on a whim tonight and scored some free tickets to Tape Face at The Pleasance. I would have never picked it but it was deliriously funny! Just so silly and unexpected. There were quite a few kids in the audience as well- 1 incidence of very mild swearing and a couple of jokes fir the mums ‘n dads, but overall very family friendly.

Maybe not for people who have a horror of audience participation, but they make that pretty clear from the outset.

My DD would recommend Ben Hart's magic show (George Square gardens).

MiddleAgedDread · 31/07/2025 12:19

Wankernomics for anyone who works in a corporate business

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 31/07/2025 22:37

Always interested in some fringe chat and recommendations. Haven’t seen anything yet, but have a few tickets booked for next week.

Mamamia35 · 01/08/2025 11:51

Ooh @MiddleAgedDread I like Wankernomics. Thanks for the recommendation. You may also like Make It Happen at the EIF if you can get tickets. The cast are brilliant.

MiddleAgedDread · 01/08/2025 12:45

@Mamamia35 funnily enough we were looking for tickets for Make it Happen earlier! It's currently sold out but says priority access pass tickets may get released so fingers crossed.

My son and husband are going to see Mythos Ragnarok tonight and I’m taking my son again next week. We’ve gone the last couple of years and I’ve recommended it to so many people.

Despite 20 years in edinburgh and working in town I still absolutely love festival time :)

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 01/08/2025 19:06

I saw Make It Happen earlier in the week. It was very good. A bit niche, but if you lived through the crash of 2008 it all makes sense and was very funny (despite the topic).

IMissSparkling · 01/08/2025 19:09

Er yes, hooray... Am I the only Edinburgher who avoids it like the plague? Love going to theatre etc throughout the rest of the year, but nothing would tempt me into the hellscape that is the city centre in August.

IndigoBluey · 01/08/2025 19:12

Oh the excitement. I am taking my mum along this month, following for comedy recommendations

Nope. 99% of my friends and colleagues would agree with you. I am very much the outlier!

Ask me again on the 31st 😂

Just as an aside, I had the weirdest Festival spot earlier- Miriam Margoyles on a bench in Drylaw Park!! The mind boggles what she was doing down there!

Nope.

Edinburgh already suffers from massive over-tourism. Festival is just an added pile of misery on top. I take an extended holiday at this time of year, not to sample the festival, but because that means I can completely avoid the city centre and trying to commute through the hordes. Feels like for decades now CEC in its various iterations simply couldn't give a toss about the actual residents of Edinburgh, and everything is geared towards catering for tourism and turning the city into a ridiculous Harry Potter themepark.

Downtherefordancing · 01/08/2025 22:17

I was in Wednesday evening to see preview of Matt Forde’s show … very funny.

I am also seeing Rhys Darby on Saturday.

WhineAndWine1 · 01/08/2025 22:19

I am going to see something completely random a drag parody of Kath and Kim. It’s either going to be amazing or utterly shit!

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 01/08/2025 22:58

I’m off to see Matt Forde next week, he’s always good.

looking forward to Monday when we’ll start seeing some shows. If anyone sees anything good late afternoon/teatime I’m in the looking for recommendations for that a lot next week.

Justathought786 · 01/08/2025 23:20

I was at the gyle to see the mirage favela show today! Lots of fun and family friendly .

Ohdeariemenotgood · 02/08/2025 14:31

Any recommendations to take young adult children to? And bars/venues for a drink? Thanks.

adcde123 · 02/08/2025 14:53

I’ll be there for 8 days - cannot wait(my 4th time). We have booked 4 shows already - top recommendation is Daniel Sloss…he’s brilliant live. We have a long list of shows we’ll book once we’re there. Most excited to see Joe Tracini.
Free Fringe is great as you can really strike lucky & just pay what you want. Top recommendation is Mark Simmons - he’s a master of puns 🤩. For something other than comedy, La Clique @ Sophie’s Surprise 29th are fab - very impressive and entertaining variety acts(not for kids)

Hillyheather · 02/08/2025 15:04

After 20 years of going i find the comedy such a hit or a miss- not bad when you were paying £5 in days of old. I've seen way to many fringe formula shows -you know what I mean, that i can't watch another. I try and seek out the other stuff now so musical theatre or plays. I'm going to see a local choir called Pitchcraft in a few weeks. They are super talented.

Juslooking2 · 03/08/2025 23:12

I’ve got two free tickets going to see Zara Gladman tomorrow. Anyone want them?

I’m now going at end of week with a friend who couldn’t make tomorrow.

Juslooking2 · 03/08/2025 23:13

To clarify- they are for Monday 4th August

ChaosDream · 03/08/2025 23:39

@Juslooking2I’d have taken them but I’m working tomorrow evening 🙄 I love Zara, she’s so funny! Her new show is reviewing well! Hope you enjoy it 😊
