might you know where I could rent a child carrier today (Thursday 14th) until Saturday? Or buy one secondhand. A very last minute trip here — too last minute for the rental companies I’ve found online — and it would save our backs!

Fort William is going to be your best chance I think. You could try giving the Ellis Brigham shop a call - they say they hire out equipment but whether they do baby carriers is something I don't know. Snowgood Mountain Centre in Corpach also say they do rental. Even if they can't help you they might know someone who could.
