Son going to start Edinburgh uni at kings buildings campus. He’s looking for halls around pollock hall area - but! Is self catering or catered better?I’ve never lived in halls and DH insists it’s better to have a square meal, I’m wondering if it will be where the squares live. Wow that’s not a pc phrase!
does anyone have any fond memories/ advice. We live close outside Edinburgh anyway. Thank you!

Can't give too much advice but we stayed in Pollock Halls on the open day and had the catered for student breakfast - it was amazing.Buffet style with so much choice and really fresh fruit. On the basis of this DD said if she went to Edinburgh she would go for catered .Huge dining room so I imagine quite a few students use it.

Pollock Halls catered is for the poshos, was always my understanding.

My DC is veggie and found the food at Pollock too samey. However BF not veggie loved it (v sporty and eats loads).

True. BF is home counties "posho". He fitted in better than DD. Scottish state school tend to avoid Pollock catered.

If he's looking for a lively halls it used to be Kinkcaid on the Cowgate.

DS2 went to Salisbury and found it too quiet, lots of overseas students who never mixed. He went to Kincaid and made loads of friends. Pollock is definitely for poshos, lots of medical students there. Depends on what he is looking for.

The catering is not great tbh. If they are willing to self cater it opens up a wider variety of accommodation and flexibility. Although they get to list five options they often get allocated somewhere else anyway!

thank you everyone. Good to know about the catered option - DH thought at least he’d get a square meal every day, but none of his friends are going that route, so good to know! Thanks DLL your help x
