Moving to Glasgow

Hi there,

My wife, 3 year old, unborn baby, and myself are considering a move to Glasgow from Edinburgh because of changing jobs and long commutes.

We are wondering what areas might be suitable for a young multi-cultural family. We are doing our research etc but wanted to get some lived experience views too.

Our criteria are:
Price: up to 450,000
Location: Our new jobs are in the south of Glasgow and Lanarkshire. So, somewhere that is easy to commute from.
Property type: 3 bedroom flat or house.
Must haves: good local nursery/primary school, nearby parks, quick access to city centre.
Preferences: close to shops,& cafes.

Can't advise on schools, but start by looking around Shawlands, Newlands, Giffnock, Clarkston

Most areas of southside are very multicultural. Newton Mearns has a large Muslim community & the schools are all very diverse and some of the highest achieving in Scotland.

East Renfrewshire would be ideal for you guys. Newton Means or Giffnock to name but a few. Schools in these areas score high in league table if this is something that is of priority to you.

Netherlee to throw another one in

Where in lanarkshire do you need to commute to? East Renfrewshire to the northeast of lanarkshire would be well over an hours commute and the M8 can be a nightmare in the mornings.

Not Glasgow City - I too would be moving to East Renfrewshire or East Dumbartonshire of that works with your commute. Start at high school catchments and work back to primary schools with houses in your budget.

Bothwell or Uddingston are both nice and within commutable distance to much of Lanarkshire and Glasgow.

At that price you would get a decent property in Strathaven. If it’s South Lanarkshire for work that would be a great location.
