Kilt at Edinburgh Tattoo

As a non-Scottish person, can I wear a kilt at the Edinburgh tattoo or is that disrespectful?

Oh you're going to be so cold. Wear layers, long trousers and a hat.
Then maybe ( for the splash of tartan) a nice big woolen tartan blanket

You do know kilts are made of 8 yards of WOOL, and ar3 generally worn with WOOL socks and boots (when casual)? The last thing a kilt is, is cold!

Don't be daft - of course it's cold. Wool does not stop wind blowing up your kilt when you're sat up high on the esplanade! There's a reason most people don't tend to wear kilt or skirts to the Tattoo.

TickingAlongNicely · 24/02/2025 09:41

Judging by the number of kilt shops as you wander up the Royal Mile, there must be more tourists buying them than actual Scottish people (also scarfs, Harry potter items, whisky and fridge markets.)

SirChenjins · 24/02/2025 09:46

Yep - though more poly than wool! The tartan tat shops are everywhere, but there's obviously a market for them.

I'm a Scott. Wear a kilt, why would this offend me? Love seeing the kilt.

My native language isn't even English, I'm Swiss.

Swiss are entitled to wear the MacAlpine tartan.

Haha. Only a very strange person would object to anything you wear.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 24/02/2025 09:59

There are some tartans you can only wear if you're from that clan and others that are universal. But nobody would really know either way to look at you anyway. It should fit well and should be pure wool.

Mumzoo5070 · 24/02/2025 10:05

*SuperLoudPoppingAction *

could you name those Clans please? 😁

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 24/02/2025 10:07

Check the tartan register. According to people who sell tartan cloth, attitudes have changed recently but I don't think everyone got the memo about that.

Sevenamcoffee · 24/02/2025 10:11

It’s fine nobody will care. Especially at that time of year you will see folk dressed up as all sorts. A Swiss person in a kilt honestly isn’t going to be an issue.

Better run it past the Tartan Mafia and the Tartan Tonton Macoute too.

Sevenamcoffee · 24/02/2025 10:14

In fact I’d think it was nice. I hope you have a good time OP.

MudpiesinEssex · 24/02/2025 10:23

Leave your matterhorn at home and people won't know you're Swiss.

If we’re going down the clan road, you take your clan from your mother, not your father!

Jeezitneverends · 24/02/2025 11:03

Aaaaaand I’ve just googled and found this isn’t the case! I’ve spent my life thinking that!

I was always of the belief that a child might not know who their father was but would know their mother so took their clan -I’ve been wrong all these years 😂

The last thing a kilt is, is cold!

But the wind will blow in every direction and will blow up your kilt and around your private parts

MudpiesinEssex · 25/02/2025 11:22

On came the gallant Scotch Brigade,
Their kilts in the wind were blowing.
None of them knew where the wind came from,
But they all knew where it was going.
