Visiting Edinburgh over a bank holiday weekend and need a cheap place to stay. We are arriving and leaving by train and happy to take a train to somewhere a short distance from Edinburgh if that means cheaper hotels! We only need something clean safe and basic as aim is to explore Edinburgh as a potential uni destination. Any suggestions gratefully received. Thank you.

There are several Travelodge, Waverley Place is a 3 min walk from the station

May bank holiday weekend? Prices are through the roof in Edinburgh because it's bank holiday and marathon weekend. Have a look in Linlithgow, Dunfermline, North Queensferry / Inverkeithing, or even along the borders railway line. I would avoid East Lothian as that will be affected by the marathon route and runners getting back from the finish on Sunday. Just make sure your accommodation is walking distance to the station. Or the bus routes are good but anywhere within the city is going to be punchy on price that weekend.

budget Op?

Scottishskifun · 11/02/2025 12:47

There's a Premier Inn south Queensferry

Ididntsaybanana · 11/02/2025 12:48

If might be a bit far for you but we stayed in Rosyth when we went last time which I think was Easter weekend. We got the train in to Edinburgh too.

If you are looking cheap then the Travelodge at the airport will still be budget and its dead easy and not long getting into Edinburgh Central from there

EBoo80 · 11/02/2025 12:51

Aberdour is a nice village where the Aberdour Hotel is 2 mins from station. Some of the suggestions upthread are a fair walk or taxi to the station.
colleagues stay at the Edinburgh Park hotels, but you might as well stay somewhere pretty and not a retail park.

MiddleAgedDread · 11/02/2025 13:17

The Premier Inn at South Queensferry is a good walk from Dalmeny station and whilst the bus stops outside it's not that frequent and takes quite a long time into the city centre.
The Travelodge at "Edinburgh Airport" (it's a couple of miles down the dual carriageway from the airport) is still £474 for 3 nights on the non-refundable rate that weekend!

Depends what you mean by cheap. There are some Premier Inn Hubs in Edinburgh now. They are tiny but usually cheaper than the regular hotels.

Most places near Edinburgh will be a fortune on the bank holiday weekend. You can look at the various hotels around Edinburgh Park but they are likely to be pricey on a bank holiday.

How short a train ride are you willing to go? If you don't mind a half hour train ride then the Falkirk Central Premier Inn is always very cheap and a short walk from Camelon station.

Why don't you give Glasgow a go. Loads of hotels and a train every half hour.. Look at itison for offers.

LIZS · 11/02/2025 13:35

Travelodge near Cameron Toll ? We stayed at PI Newhaven which was ok in cleanliness if run down. Restaurants nearby and views over the Forth, tramline about five mins walk.

outdooryone · 11/02/2025 13:36

That weekend means that anywhere within 30 miles is going to be silly expensive or booked already.

MouldyCandy · 11/02/2025 13:42

Try Dalkeith. There's a Premium Inn at Dobbies on a bus route into town and another one further out at Melville Golf Club.

IDoLikeToBeByTheSea · 11/02/2025 13:43

Premier Inn in Leith

wherearemypastnames · 11/02/2025 14:04

Glasgow often works - great train service

Abracadabra12345 · 11/02/2025 14:19

Stirling is another consideration

Hurdlin · 11/02/2025 16:09

Yes Stirling is a good option. Edinburgh prices are crazy.

LaughingLemur · 11/02/2025 16:19

If you'd consider a hostel we stayed at the Lowport Hostel in Linlithgow. Really near the train station, reasonable price and quiet.

MajorCarolDanvers · 11/02/2025 16:22

Dunfermline is what you need and then get the train over.

Thanks everyone!
