Young Scot card

Has anyone tried successfully to add the transport part of the young Scot card for free travel electronically to your DCs phone? Apparently it is possible but I can't work out how you do it. Thank you to anyone in advance!

Have you worked this out @Pollydollydoodle? Would love to do this too. It wasn't easy getting the bloody card in the first place with all the identification required so I can believe it's not easy to add it electronically either!

Tried that app, it reads the card but it then says there’s nothing to read?

dementedpixie · 19/10/2024 20:01

Does it give an error message that is covered in the link I gave about the app?
Is your child age 16+?

Not exactly on topic but I would like to add my over 60s bus pass to my phone. Is it possible? I live in Scotland, I am 77, I have most store cards etc on my phone so why not my free bus pass?
Can I add it and if so how?

It just says there’s nothing to load—her card is on the app, but it doesn’t seem to recognise that she’s got the free travel on there. It’s not covered in the Q&A section.

@sunshinechaser @theferry so I managed to get it to scan, it says nothing to add (presuming that's because travel is already added to the physical card). I'm now wondering if it's just not possible to have this card electronically on your phone. 🤷🏼‍♀️

@Pollydollydoodle that’s exactly what is happening to me. Can’t find a way around it

dementedpixie · 20/10/2024 12:47

The app is supposed to add travel to the card. You need the physical card to use it on the bus. It's not something you can have on your phone.

Did you follow these steps?

Video Transcript
How to use the app
Follow the steps in this video to add free bus travel to your Young Scot National Entitlement Card. You’ll need to have it handy and have the Transport Scot Pass Collect App downloaded.

Open the app and click ‘Collect a young persons bus pass’.

On the next screen click ‘Yes’.

And then scroll down and click ‘Start Collection’.

Now hold the back of the phone to the Young Scot NEC, as if you’re doing a contactless payment. It’s important to make sure you hold it in the right place – this is different depending on whether you have an Android or iOS phone. The correct place is usually at the top for iOS and in the middle for Android.

Hold still until the app recognises your card.

Go back the home screen and click ‘What’s on my card?’.

Followed by ‘Press here to start’.

This will show the free bus travel has been added onto the card.

Just to reiterate that you are adding travel to the card. You need the card to travel and can't use the app instead. It says this in the FAQa

dementedpixie · 20/10/2024 13:03

Can I load my free bus travel on an app rather than carrying the card?
No, you must have your card with you if you want to travel for free.

Why can’t there be an app instead of a card we can use on the bus – it would be much easier?
We recognise that there is an interest in an app based travel solution. Unfortunately, the compatible technology is not yet available to provide an app for concessionary travel, but we continue to monitor technology advancements in this area.

Pollydollydoodle · 20/10/2024 13:16

@dementedpixie thank you for that. You'd think in this day and age when young people are attached to their phones they would be capable of creating an app wouldn't you!
