Hi!

We are looking at moving to Edinburgh. I have a 7 year old son and 5 year old daughter. I would like to put them into a co-ed school in Edinburgh. My son is also very into football, so does anyone know of a school in Edinburgh that offers football at age 7/8? when I look at websites, they seem to show football teams that are aged 14 and above...I would be looking for a school that's inclusive to international students, balances sport and academia, offers football? I read some accounts of bullying at fetties and Edinburgh academy which was rather scary...any comments or advice on which schools would be good choices? thank you so much!

Are you looking at private schools? A lot of Edinburgh private schools are heavily into rugby, and definitely not into football at all.

Strongly recommend looking at Cargilfield.

I think football, especially at primary age level, is mostly played via local clubs and training outside of school. Certainly in non private schools, the kids who play for the school team (if they have one) are kids that are already training and playing elsewhere.

I don't live in Edinburgh anymore but in my much smaller city there are multitudes of clubs that start children from pre school onwards. The more successful ones start to be more picky with players once they get to about age 10ish but there are generally clubs that will suit all levels of players including those that want to play for fun rather than being particularly skilled.

When you know what area you are moving to you can search to see what is available locally.

I know Heriot’s have hired/are hiring football coaches, because so many parents have concerns about rugby and traumatic brain injury.

So it’s a fledgling programme, but likely to grow rapidly

Most of the state primary schools in south Edinburgh have football teams and although some of the boys are taking it quite seriously as they already play for clubs it is supposed to be inclusive and for all at that age. There are also good community clubs all round Edinburgh who do junior football.
