Shawlands Acad

My child is at Shawlands and is having a terrible experience. Many classes so disrupted by out of control behaviour and some teachers scared of pupils. There are some good teachers but many seem to have checked out. Theres so little support for motivated/able kids. School make noises but nothing changes. Has anyone else experienced this? It is such a disappointment. Seems like the only option is to move or see if we can somehow go private. Feel bad for the good teachers and the kids who have no choice.

I have a friend who taught there who refused to put her kids there. It's a shame because there are so few good schools in Glasgow already.

Thanks. That's interesting. Not a huge surprise given our experience.

I'll see if I can find out more info. We've just decided to move out of the city.

Sorry to hear this. Have you written to the headteacher to explain your concerns?

No. But we have met with senior management.

There used to be a poster on here who sang the praises of Shawlands, I'm not sure she's still here.
My Dd went to Hyndland, she's 23 now so it's going back some years, but I didn't hear good things about Shawlands then.

How does it compare with other schools in the area? Bellahouston/Holyrood etc. Is it generally just how things are in GCC schools at the moment with all the cuts and more coming.
Shawlands definitely seems to be thought of as one of the better schools in the area

I can remember it being a terrible school with gang fights occurring regularly back in the 90’s when my cousins went there.

Personally having lived in the southside/east Ren for decades I’ve never heard anything positive about the place apart from a couple of posts I’ve read on here, and if I remember correctly that was more to do with the fact it is/was an SRU school of rugby.

Yes, this is also my memory of Shawlands sadly. I had hoped the many positive posts/threads I read on here meant it had drastically improved since then but then realised they were all from the same poster. I'm glad she/her child had a good experience but the stats and experiences of many others don't align. When we moved back to Glasgow we looked into it more and decided against the catchment despite family connections to the area.

DD is an NQT and she and her peers have had experience of a few south side schools. Hillpark is a no-go; it's so bad that the therapy dog bit an NQT and students on placement never met the HT. St Pauls and Kings Park have been much better.
