Exams 2024 appeals

Lots going on in the original exam thread but thought I’d start one only for appeals as I’m curious how many of our DCs will be successful.

Mine submitted one for chemistry today, took 2 minutes online

placemarking. Thanks for starting this thread.
Appeals submitted for H History (1 mark off a B) and H English (2 marks off an A). Its the History one I really want to be successful.
Annoying we have to wait til Halloween time to find out though (except if its a priority one)
I know appeals have changed but I still have hope they DID mark it wrong. Nothing to lose is the way I see it.

HGC2 · 19/08/2024 18:27

@motheronthedancefloor I wasn’t sure of dates for hearing, that’s good to know! Hope your dc gets the marks! We’re just hoping for a mark so fingers crossed, it’s more a matter of principal really for mine

How do you find out how many marks they are off?

The SQA coordinator in school can tell you, you can also do a subject access request to SQA but that would be too late

Hello - we've appealed English Higher, DD was 1 mark off an A. Fingers crossed!

motheronthedancefloor · 19/08/2024 19:56

Thanks. For History she was getting As all year, then she goes and gets a C. It makes no sense at all, and then to find out she's one mark off a B.
Hence appealing. Its so infuriating that prior work is no longer considered though.
Good luck everyone.

HigherOptions · 19/08/2024 20:47

Appealing Higher History B and Higher Chemistry B - teachers told her it was worth doing - not sure of the precise shortfall from a Grade A but narrow enough to have a go. Higher History is the one that bugs her most - usually got 80/90% so B was a disappointment.

Worth a go.

Hapagirl48 · 19/08/2024 21:26

Appealed Nat 5 Art and Design for DD. Was predicted a B and got a C and was one mark off a B. She got 7 As otherwise. Good luck everyone! 🤞🤞🤞

Sunsgoingtokeepshining · 20/08/2024 10:28

Still waiting to hear how close she was to getting to the expected (higher) grade. B in geography, never had less than 90% in any tests before this. How long can it take for a teacher to look out the grades and respond? My private school friend had a full breakdown of all results emailed within 2 hours of results being released.

Coffeethrowtrampbitch · 20/08/2024 10:37

DD has appealed Nat 5 Modern Studies as she was 1 mark off a B, DS1 has appealed Higher History as he missed by 2 marks. Both were predicted A/B on their coursework.
I hope we are all successful! The B higher result would make a difference for DS1 uni application and DD is very underconfident and loved that subject so will hopefully boost her for Higher.

That's rubbish. My state school DD got all of her scores on the first day back (last Wednesday). Her guidance teacher emailed them to anyone who asked for them as well as info on how to appeal if they wanted to. However, it is a school obsessed with it's exam results...

motheronthedancefloor · 20/08/2024 13:37

I'm guessing the number of appeals per school is published or something and they dont share marks because they dont want to look bad?
DDs school is already very low performing so I guess they have nothing much to lose by letting people know!

ThatsNotMyTeen · 21/08/2024 09:00

Appeals in for AH maths here for child 1 (met his B for Uni but wants to appeal anyway) N5 graphic communication for child 2. No idea if they will be successful probably not but they are close to the boundary for next grade up so nothing to lose.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 21/08/2024 11:32

Unfortunately it doesn’t really matter what they got in previous tests/exams now as they’ve changed appeals. So if they’ve had a not so good day on the exam then that’s it. It does happen sadly, which is why teacher grades in Covid were higher than actual grades - eg a teacher might think 15 of their pupils are on track for a B, but some do better and some do worse on the day so maybe only 12 actually get a B.

bluebellsandspring · 21/08/2024 12:50

I read something on the What I Know About University facebook page that made me wonder about whether or not this may be behind some of the exam shockers in Scotland where pupils achieve much lower grades than predicted and were not aware of having messed up the exams. Some of the pupils in England were able to view their exam scripts on the day they received their A Level results. It didn't apply to all pupils and seemed to be dependent on the exam board. However, it became clear that for some pupils with messy handwriting large sections of text were not marked. Parents were talking about submitting appeals and one person said their DC had in a previous year been upgraded form a C to an A in one subject where large sections of text had not been marked. I don't think it has happened to my DC this year, but it did make me wonder how many pupils in Scotland this may apply to.

motheronthedancefloor · 21/08/2024 13:06

I know appeals have changed, and that people can have a bad day, but my daughter came out that exam happy and has been getting As since N5 so I don't believe for a minute that she had a 'bad day' on the day of her History exam. Something has gone wrong with the marking there. Don't know if appealing will make a difference but if enough people appeal that subject I hope they will spot something has gone wrong. Apparently Higher History has had a big drop in passes this year which may support my belief something has gone wrong!

ThatsNotMyTeen · 21/08/2024 13:27

I’d have thought issues in the marking would have been picked up at the moderation/in setting the grade boundary stage but maybe I am placing too much faith in the SQA! Fingers crossed her appeal is successful.

i am also on that FB group and have been quite surprised at how many marks some peoples have gone up by

sunnierclimbs · 21/08/2024 17:27

My DD's teachers saying they can't access her breakdown or bands from exams.
The SQA coordinator says she's too busy to give them to her as dealing with appeals which I get.
My DD just wants to see what she actually scored as wondering whether to swop a subject for higher. She's not unhappy with her grades but wants to know bands.

Can she request from SQA for free. She said she thinks you have to pay £3.81 per paper?
Surely , that's not correct.
Does anyone know how to request marks without pissing off the teachers?

if not go to SQA and then about SQA and you can do a subject access request for grades

Interesting to read about History. Appeals in for 2/3 AH’s as both were lower than any previous exams/ test. Son had felt both had gone well. And the subject teacher who is also a marker disagrees with the dissertation marking.

Feels like something has gone wrong for more than just History.

motheronthedancefloor · 21/08/2024 19:30

just came across this article! You may have to go through 12ft ladder to get past the paywall

https://www.heraldscotland.com/news/24531249.teachers-hit-sqa-unfair-exam-marking/

WeAllHaveWings · 22/08/2024 16:38

SQA have responded on Facebook regarding Higher History. (Sorry can't do links on app)

There have been misleading media reports about this year’s Higher History assessments.

The 2024 marking approach was consistent with the 2023 approach and we're confident that the attainment rate accurately reflected learner performance.

motheronthedancefloor · 22/08/2024 17:06

lying bastards! If multiple teachers are complaining to the press (and DDs teachers telling her they agree), and kids are going from consistent As to a C, something has gone wrong! This is their "we don't care" answer. I note they have disabled comments cause they know parents will be angry.

DinnaeFashYersel · 22/08/2024 17:27

We were back to school today. Turns out DS got 58% or 59% in 4 x Nat 5 subjects so school are very enthusiastic about putting in appeals

WhyIhatebaylissandharding · 22/08/2024 21:05

SQA just don’t care, remarks have very little success as it’s all about protecting the process not about the students. Some subjects (the way they are assessed) are not fit for purpose, see the comments on Art & Design in that article.
