Hi all, we are looking to move into the Helensburgh area - any advice on the primary schools and how hard it might be to get a spot at Hermitage Academy?

You'll get a place at Hermitage as it's the only secondary school in the area.

Theoretically you should be fine for all the schools if you are in catchment - Hermitage and Colgrain are bigger, JLB and St Joes smaller; JLB is currently doing a decant into portacabins due to RAAC work as far as i know. Rhu and Csrdross are closest villages and both a reasonable size in terms of classes.

i'm not aware of anyone ever being refused a space but I have heard that the Academy now has a couple of year groups that are "full" - don't know what that means in practice.

Also depends why you are moving there, if military there's priority

If you're catholic, you can go to nearby "our lady and st patricks high school". There's also Lomond School if you wish to go independent. Hermitage is a good school (I worked there for a bit around 15 years ago) but its been going down the league tables.

The authority are legally obliged to provide you with a place at Hermitage, there's no other school within commuting distance. Schools in Argyll generally don't get filled up.
