Anyone driven South recently?

We are off to silverstone next week from Edinburgh. What way would you go? Usually I’d say take the M6 but it’s been so long since we’ve driven down south, I don’t ever remember there being toll roads. Wondering if the M1 would be easier. We are in no rush on driving day as have a travelodge in the middle of an industrial estate booked so basically a bed for the night before heading to the circuit. The only thing out of travel day is wanting somewhere decent to eat enroute if that’s at all possible.

Southerner here. The only toll part of the M6 is a small section near Birmingham which is totally optional. The main M6 is entirely free to drive on.

That said, I would take the M1 because Silverstone is far more easily accessible from it.

Conversely I would always take the m6 in preference to the M1. But on this occasion I would probably just plug it into Waze and do what it suggests as it is really all dependent on what is going on with traffic generally on the day.

I don't see a lot of difference time wise and would always choose the M6 over the M1. Tebay in the lakes is lovely to stop at but might be a bit early on in your trip.

DH drives Edinburgh to Yorkshire and back weekly.

He checks before he sets off... sometimes quicker straight up A1, sometimes on the M6 then M62.

Theres a lot of roadworks on M1 and A1 causing problems. I don't know the M6 personally.

Thanks all. Think we are sticking with the m6 and food at teebay.

Tebay’s always the clincher!

AnneShirleysNewDress · 23/07/2024 21:44

You've made the right choice. M6 and Tebay is the way to go.

Don’t get too excited about tebay. I went once based on fan reviews on here and had the shittest most revolting and overpriced breakfast ever…
