VAT on school blazers

Can anyone tell me why I have paid 20% VAT on a school blazer and sports shirt from a school uniform provider? I thought there was no VAT on children's clothes.

As far as I’m aware there’s always been VAT on older children’s clothing - depending on the size, including school uniforms, since VAT was first introduced.

Depends upon the size. Once they're over a 32" chest, for example, they're not regarded as being for children.

Dh works in VAT and he says above posters are correct. To do with size rather than it being for children specifically.

Yes, same with shoes. My DSs were out of children's sizes in primary school so had to pay for adult shoes inc vat

Thanks for the replies. That makes sense.

It doesn’t really make sense, as what adult would buy a school blazer, but that’s tax for you.
