Arran or Millport for a day?

If we are in Glasgow for a few days and want to visit an island, how much realistically could we do? I know Arran would likely be preferable, but would there be much difference in what we can do in a day?
We’d have the car. How much re each place could we squeeze in on a day trip?

Millport is probably your best bet if you only have 1 day. Don't take the car though, there is no point. Drive to Largs and get the ferry across. There is a bus meets each ferry and will take you to Millport. It's pretty small. A lot of people hire bikes and cycle the 10 miles around the island.

Arran is a far bigger island. The road around the outside is around 75 miles. If you are going to Arran you will need to be up early. The ferry crossing alone takes over an hour. Depends what you want to do will determine whether you need a car or not. If you just want to visit Brodick or Lamlash then leave the car and catch the bus when you get there. If you want to see all Arran has to offer then you will need a car.

You could also consider Bute. It's closer to Glasgow. Ferry takes you from Weymes Bay to Rothsay. You would probably need the car if you go there as it's a fairly large island.

Go to Arran for the Arran malt experience tour. Lovely whisky.

Arran is so very beautiful. My ex in-laws live in Lochranza so stayed there many times.

Bear in mind that at the moment Cal Mac isnt having a very good time with its ships and there have been a lot of disruptions to ferries

I wouldn’t go to Arran for a day. Too big to see it all. Bute Is a good day out.

I'd vote for Bute!
Admire Wemyss bay station on the way to the ferry.
