Newburgh Fife

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if some kind people could make some recommendations for things to do in and around Newburgh in Fife? Our family is staying for a week: 2 teenagers, 2 adults, 1 grandfather and 2 dogs. The main reason for the visit is to scatter my late parents’ ashes (all above board) but we would like to explore the area. My mother’s family have long since gone so although I’m familiar with the area I don’t know it well. We have transport and I’m aware the village is quiet.

Thank you in advance.

I've not had a chance to go myself yet but I'm looking forward to going to the new museum in Perth.

Is it this week you are there op?
I don't think the weather is going to be too bad so a trip to St Andrews would be a nice day out.
You are also only 1hr from Edinburgh so that could easy fill a day also.
The V&A in Dundee
Anstruther for fish and chips

If you go to Edinburgh there is Discovery ship that is also interesting for a visit

The Discovery is in Dundee next to the V&A. St Andrews, Dundee, Perth and Edinburgh are all pretty accessible.

The villages on the East Neuk of Fife are well worth a visit.

Thank you all for taking the time to reply. Yes, St Andrews, Discovery and Anstruther are all fab but we've been before when we went years ago with my parents. Might re-visit of course. Not going until the end of May so fingers crossed for the weather.

Falkland is lovely and not too far, with Falkland Palace and intependent shops (including a great vintage clothes shop). You can walk up the Lomond Hills and there is Pillars of Hercules nearby for organic food. Also in that area is Loch Leven with Loch Leven's Larder and a boat to the island where Mary Queen of Scots was prisoner.

The Fife coastal path starts/ends in Newburgh so you could walk some of that. Lindores Abbey and the distillery are there too. Newport has some nice shops and a couple of great places for lunch. Kitschnbake and the Newport Hotel are good. Also the Tayport bakery.

I like Broughty Ferry for a wander. You can hire electric bikes and cycle along the promenade to Monifieth or Carnoustie.

In the East Neuk Secret Bunker is always popular with my lot. Lovely beach at Elie with a good water sports centre. Not sure if the Elie Chainwalk is still open. There is an outdoor centre just along from Anstruther at Cellardyke. They do archery and other activities. There is also a bird of prey place near Crail where you can fly birds. I prefer the Crail chip shop to the famous one in Anstruther. Lobster and crab available freshly cooked to order at Crail harbour. If you are out that way Cambo House and Gardens does the best scones and cakes in the stables cafe. Nice gift shop and small garden centre too.

My teens liked this: https://bookings.foxlakedundee.co.uk/activities

Also ice skating and bowling in Dundee.

There will be a Broughty Ferry to Tayport water taxi at some point but not sure when it starts.

Oh end of May is a great time to go to the isle of May to see the Puffins. You can get a boat from Anstruther. There is also a sea safari on a rib. Dolphins and whales a slim possibility.

Justonemorecoffeeplease · 29/04/2024 21:25

Thank you all so much. It’s going to be a bittersweet trip but by the looks of it we can have some fun too.

I hope everything goes well with the scattering and you manage to enjoy the break too. If you need any other information just ask.
