Received this from For Women Scotland earlier. Deadline for emailing your MSPs is tomorrow - ahead of the vote this Wednesday. Sent off my eight emails 😇As most of them prob voted for the Act originally, not holding out too much hope...

Hi, by the way. I'm a Mumsnet newbie 😊

2 minute action for today

I’m not in Scotland but husband’s family are, and commenting to help boost the post. Thanks for sharing this.

Perfect! Thanks @NeedANewOne25

I get the need to protest - really I do. But it's a total waste of time as the SNP/Greens think this new legislation is marvellous and they do not allow any disagreement on that opinion. You can write as many letters as you like and you will get positive replies from conservative MSPs and the odd Labour MSP, LibDems are also on board with this nonsense, and SNP and green MSPs either won't reply or will send a standard letter back.

Remember this fiasco at the ballot boxes at the general election, add it to all the REST of the fiascos like the ferries, the corruption, the named person, Isla Bryson, keeping us locked down for far longer than other parts of the UK, "blended learning", sliding academic standards, the fact we're paying more tax etc etc etc and give them one enormous kicking.

What is wrong with you that you support hate crime?

Misthios · 16/04/2024 09:06

That's what you've taken from this thread? That hate crime is a good thing? Not that it's a poorly written piece of legislation that is seeing police swamped with thousands of reports, all of which have to be investigated?

OK then.

I assume that this is sarcastic!!!

there was an excellent chapter in Tory Stewart’s book about this. That poor legislation gets voted through cause MP’s have a fear of people taking a look at their voting record and saying ‘you voted against the hate crime legislation , you hateful person’, without examining the legislation itself and seeing that it is an unworkable dogs dinner.

Heard Humdrum on the radio this morning about this
What a numpty
(Is that a hate crime)
How can anyone vote for this shower

There are good reasons to oppose the HCA but that the police are being swamped is not one of them. That is only happening because people who oppose it are deliberately trying to crash the system by reporting thousands of "crimes" which are anything but. I would focus your argument on something more concrete than that.

They wouldn't be able to if the ridiculous thing didn't exist in the first place.

GirlWithEdinburghTattoo · 16/04/2024 19:02

Yes, @Misthios totally agree on how pathetically ineffectual protest like this is, however... a girl's gotta do...
Quick update on the pathetically sad response to my emails - the regional Tory gave a positive reply but it was an unimpressive cut 'n' paste job. Another regional is the presiding officer so her flunky gave me the old blah blah blah. So 2/8. Not expecting any further updates, but I'll let you know...

I'm just thinking back about 4 years to the "blended learning" proposals which would have seen my kids in school about 3 days a month. I was incensed with rage as were many others and fired off emails to EVERYONE, all the list and local MSPs, everyone who ever uttered the word "education" on the telly, everyone. I got a few very positive responses from Jamie Greene I think it was, and a Liz woman - both Tories. A very nice response from Johann Lamont of Labour who sympathised with my point of view as a former teacher herself but who couldn't act for me as she didn't represent my part of the country. The SNP and Green reps either didn't bother to write back, or just sent me copy and pasted flannel.

I do think though that even if they didn't read all the irate emails they got, the sheer number made them reconsider. And then that idiot Swinney tried to gaslight the country by saying that no, he never said blended learning, that was only ever a contingency and of course they wanted nothing more than to get everyone back in full time yadda yadda.

GirlWithEdinburghTattoo · 16/04/2024 20:00

It's most depressing. I do private tutoring and I'm shocked at what passes for (state provided) education these days.
I also cannot begin to say how disillusioned I am with the party political system. Not thinking about who I can vote for, but rather what pithy, witty comment I can spoil my ballot paper with!

Very well said @Misthios 👏

Rainbowshit · 17/04/2024 20:23

The vote to repeal was lost today. 64 voted to keep it. Haven't seen the breakdown but the numbers suggest all snp and greens voted to keep it. Unsurprising but shameful.

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 17/04/2024 20:24

Is there a list of the 64?

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 17/04/2024 20:34

Thanks @Rainbowshit
