Furnishing a new house in Fife

We’ve just completed a on a new house and now need rather a lot of furniture items, we’re in Fife and moved here 4 years ago but have been renting since so I have no idea where to go look for interiors items as I’ve not been in the market!

Prepared to travel 90 mins or so - even over to Glasgow as there often seems to be more choice there for other things.

Items we need pretty urgently are;

New bed and mattress for us - I would like to treat ourselves to something pretty decent quality

A new dinning table and chairs - we’re going for a mid century look. I have quite a good thread running on Property and DIY, on that lots of people suggesting Ercol, any stockists with a large amount on display?

Nice fabric shops with a good choice of books to look through - for blinds and cushions

Light fittings again in a minimalist mid century style

Someone who makes bespoke sofas and chairs

Farmore Interiors in St Andrews has some lovely stuff.

Fabric - County Fabrics in Crook of Devon or Rejects store in Kirkcaldy

Bed - Comfort Store in Inverkeithing

Curtains handmade - Catherine Lepreux Interiors. No showroom, she comes to you. With fabric books.

Can't help with your bed or stuff you need urgently, but McIntosh of Kirkcaldy are up there with Ercol and G-plan for classic mid-century wooden furniture.

There's a lot of it still out there, being sold off in house clearances, etc. So it's definitely worth adding that name to your online searches (ebay) and going along to secondhand shops. I think a lot people won't realise what make granny's old sideboard was, so worth casting your eye over pics.

I live in Fife. Gillies in Broughty Ferry and Sterling in Dunfermline (the one in Tillicoultry is bigger though) are two places I shop. Next has some good stuff. The store in Kirkcaldy has quite a decent selection. I also like Dunelm. There is SS store in Kirkcaldy but I tend to go to the one in Dundee. Belgica in Bo'ness might be worth a look. Also JB McLean in Edinburgh near Murrayfield.

Ooh and for curtains I second Farmore in St Andrews is great. They did all the curtains and blinds for my house.

TooMinty · 24/03/2024 18:20

I'm sure I saw Ercol at the Sterling in Tillicoultry, not sure how far that is for you? There's also a good second hand place near Doune.

Annie Mo's in Aberdeen!

Sterling in Dunfermline or Tillicoultry are good. You can also go to Next at Kirkcaldy retail park. They’ve got a decent furniture section. I am sure there are a couple of Sofa shops there too. There is a bed shop at Dunfermline Halbeath which might be Bensons and also another bed shop at Carnegie Retail Park next to Matalan.

Also Habitat at Argos does some nice mid century style bits which aren't too expensive. I've got a lovely console and a coffee table from there. You can click and collect from the Leven store in Sainsbury.

Kinglassielassie · 24/03/2024 18:40

Yes, at least one of the sofa shops in Kirkcaldy retail park does customised sofas, though they're not 100% bespoke.

helpfulperson · 24/03/2024 18:50

Rejects in Kirkcaldy. They have a nice cafe as well.

Mathsisfun · 30/03/2024 07:27

There’s a good bed shop in cardenden! Also Gillies in Perth. The cafe is nice there too!
