Are mince and tatties healthy?

Just ate a plate of mince and tatties, DP cooked them. Truly delicious! But I can't remember if mince is healthy or full of fat. OK in moderation or fabulous protein?

Depends what %fat the meat is I guess. 5% fat mince is not going to have a great deal of saturated fat in. My mum used to skim the fat off old fashioned mince as it boiled.

Also depends on the additions. Using stock cubes/pots/instant gravy granules can add a lot of salt. Adding carrots, peas, green beans etc makes it healthier (and the meat stretch further.)

Like any red meat... fine in moderation.

Depends on the mince/quality/fat content and what type of diet you need?

I'm happy to eat fat so for me it wouldn't matter, I need to eat low carb so the Tatties would need to be a small amount and I'd have veg with it.

I guess it also depends on how much salt is added?

I'd say overall it's a home made meal with meat so on the healthy side to me.

DP does add stock so it is quite salty I suppose. It's unlikely he bought low fat mince. Think I'll adapt his method, hope it doesn't result in rubbery mince.

It's everything in moderation though. I wouldn't eat it every day but I probably have some sort of mince type product weeklyish. So it might be chili or burgers or meatballs or mince but I tend to try to buy good quality mince but as I said, I'm not too worried about the fat content. Especially when you are making burgers etc as the fat tends to come out anyway.

it's a good meal, especially if you use only 5% fat and pour as much a you can off after browning the meat, you've got onions and carrots in there ,I add frozen peas into the pot about five minutes before it's ready and you can add some other veggies on the side with the potatoes if you want .

Love all the veggies!

I've not had mince and tatties in years! I can actually smell them. My mum never made them so we would only get then at my Gran's house. I think she put wee tinned carrots in the mince, maybe peas. Oh, the memories that have just come flooding back!

No idea if healthy although I remember her straining off the fat!

Canny beat it! DP confirmed he used 5% mince but now states he won't make it again for a while because it's so nice he eats two massive platefuls 😂

my husband is like that, I try and squirrel some away to the freezer for another day before he sees how much is left, he loves the stuff as long as it's mince from the online butchers that we use and he loves the huge mince beef & onion pies we get from there too, I like them as well mind, the gravy is amazing.

Comfort food of the gods. I throw in carrots too, peas on the side, and make double the amount to freeze for moments when DH needs nutritional comfort (like the final Six Nations match v Ireland).

Be sure it’s a Jackson’s tattie in future; brings the flavour of the mince out 🤣
