All the foods the Scottish Government plan to make more expensive

The SNP are about to wage war on the popadom.

Poverty is rampant, NHS and education are in crisis but our government are concentrating on increasing the price of porridge.

In addition the ban on promotions of food our great leaders deem unhealthy they are also going to restrict practices in restaurants

No more ice cream factory puddings for your kids at Pizza Hut or complimentary prawn crackers with your Chinese

In hotels you can still have a buffet breakfast and eat as many sausages and eggs as you like but only one pastry each.

Will there ever come a day, these lunatics will actually address issues like unemployment, crime, NHS, education, the state of the roads, the cost of living crisis? Treats and promotions are not the problem. I can't see businesses/restaurants standing for this at all.

EVHead · 01/03/2024 11:05

Is there evidence about the impact of the ban on alcohol promotions?

Onacuctustree · 01/03/2024 11:11

Porridge??
Can you link to the source please OP?
I want to spread this as far as I can.

There’s loads of news articles if you Google.

It’s just a consultation at this stage but yeah huge waste of time. I do wonder what the next elections will bring.

BigBoysDontCry · 01/03/2024 11:27

Looks like someone on scotgov is on a keto diet...

Why not introduce a max unit price on vegetables/fruits and healthy choices?

Why not educate people better on health and diet?

Why not support people to learn to cook?

As I said on another thread, it's all stick and no carrot with this lot.

Moltenpink · 01/03/2024 11:30

What on earth is wrong with porridge?

BigBoysDontCry · 01/03/2024 11:38

What on earth is wrong with porridge?

Bugger all.

It's also low GI so is recommended for people on a diabetic type diet. Doesn't work for me unfortunately but it's a better breakfast than crunchy nut cornflakes. Even the little sachets are better than most unless you are going for a sweetened/flavoured one.

RaraRachael · 01/03/2024 11:47

I wish we could get rid of them but unfortunately there are still a lot of people who think they're doing a grand job.

Off topic I know but I live near the A96 which has one of the highest rates of road accidents and deaths of any road. For years people have been campaigning to get it dualled all the way from Aberdeen to Inverness but they've just announced it's not going to happen on their watch.
Since they've cosied up with the Greens it's obvious that people dying on the road in the NE isn't important as we should all be using public transport.
Yep buses every hour, 2 carriage trains every 2 hours is really working.

TwoTeas · 01/03/2024 11:52

Whoever came up with that list - and didn't see a problem with including porridge - has an absolute tin ear for a soundbite.

WandaWonder · 01/03/2024 11:55

I believe basic porridge is not included but all that instant stuff with added sugar and other bits

ThisHonestQuail · 01/03/2024 12:01

I would also assume it’s those packets of maple syrup/fruity/biscoff flavoured porridge. It’s not just going to be oats is it 😂

eggandonion · 01/03/2024 12:06

Im still annoyed about zero porridge being available in a hotel we stayed in in Scotland. It was a group trip a few years ago. Everyone got a cooked Scottish breakfast. Not great for this vegetarian who wanted porridge.
(I had a similar experience with the same stupid group elsewhere...I really like Scotland)

They won't be aiming at the plain oats, but may write the legislation in a way that catches them. No shortage of poorly drafted legislation out there.

The consultation is here, since OP didn't bother to give us a link:
https://consult.gov.scot/population-health/restriction-promotion-of-food-and-drink-proposed/

You can read the proposals here: https://www.gov.scot/publications/restricting-promotions-food-drink-high-fat-sugar-salt-consultation-detail-proposed-regulations/pages/3/

I don't have time to look through it right now. I would only note that while porridge is listed in the categories of food "within scope of promotions restrictions", it then states "Within targeted food categories, we propose that promotions restrictions will only apply to pre-packed[8] food and drink products that are high in fat, sugar or salt (HFSS) as defined by the 2004/05 nutrient profiling[9] model (NPM)." This would not apply to plain oats.

What the hell? Don't touch my crumpets!

“Porridge oats” are specifically listed.

byteme1011 · 01/03/2024 18:54

I think this is a good thing - I suspect porridge will be those chuck hot water in a sachet thing that are really sweet!

NotAllowed · 01/03/2024 18:56

The Communist SNP

AgentProvocateur · 01/03/2024 18:58

It’s a ban on promoting these goods - ie, taking them out of meal deals. I don’t think that’s a bad thing.

DaphneMoo · 01/03/2024 19:04

They are so controlling, why can't I get my lunch deal? On one hand they propose this but want drug consumption rooms. If they really wanted to safe guard us why won't they ban 16 and 17 year old getting married, now that is a government intervention I would get behind.

Me neither. The OP mentions only being allowed one pastry item at a hotel buffet breakfast but surely it doesn't mean that does it? A hotel wouldn't be expected to police how many pastries everyone is, having ay nre? It surely just means somewhere like Costa can't have offers of buy a coffee get a free croissant? Is there a full explanation of what promoting these goods means?

alonglongshot · 01/03/2024 19:06

Without meal deals many of us won't be able to afford lunch from a supermarket. 😔

RichardMarxisinnocent · 01/03/2024 19:08

Found this
"It is proposed that non-pre-packed products, such as loose bakery items, will be out of scope of the policy at this time because businesses may not be able to determine whether these products can or cannot be promoted due to relevant nutritional information not being available"

So pastries at buffet breakfasts are unaffected I think.

NotAllowed · 01/03/2024 19:09

The point is, it’s more busy body government overreach that isn’t need whatsoever.

It doesn’t say that, it says porridge oats.
