All the foods the Scottish Government plan to make more expensive

The SNP are about to wage war on the popadom.

Poverty is rampant, NHS and education are in crisis but our government are concentrating on increasing the price of porridge.

In addition the ban on promotions of food our great leaders deem unhealthy they are also going to restrict practices in restaurants

No more ice cream factory puddings for your kids at Pizza Hut or complimentary prawn crackers with your Chinese

In hotels you can still have a buffet breakfast and eat as many sausages and eggs as you like but only one pastry each.

When people are on a low income making treats more expensive will impact both mental and physical health in a negative way.

Misthios · 01/03/2024 19:23

Can't be treating us like adults, and doing things like cooking in schools, education on nutrition and letting us get on with it. Have to start banning stuff, making it more expensive.

They can fuck right off. Roll on the election and I hope they get a right kicking.

I can't wait for the day they are getting told to get to fuck, however with people voting for them purely for independence, and the Tory Westminster hate, I can't see that happening any time soon. So depressing.

Northernsouloldies · 01/03/2024 19:30

Doesn't Scotland have more pressing problems?and you all know what they are I can't be arsed listing them all.between Humza thinking he's a world leader and this new dictact on food which has the stench of sturgeon about it 'the control factor '.it really is time to be rid of the SNP.

BoohooWoohoo · 01/03/2024 19:31

Fucking hell. I wonder if ready made sandwiches and salads come under the ready meal category ?

BigBoysDontCry · 01/03/2024 19:32

It's not about whether we personally think buying chocolate or pastries is a good idea or not. It's about deliberately restricting the ability of those on limited budgets to make those choices. Instead of promoting and making the good choices more affordable and allowing free will plus market forces plus education and skills to improve outcomes they'd rather punish people. The supermarket and manufacturers won't give a crap really.

All stick and no carrot.

Not sure, but lots of elderly people rely on ready prepared meals.

DuesToTheDirt · 01/03/2024 19:48

Well the sugar tax resulted in sugar being replaced by chemicals in soft drinks, which I think is a hideous solution. I don't drink a huge amount of fizzy drinks, but when I do I want something that tastes nice and isn't full of chemicals - difficult to find now.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 01/03/2024 19:58

Porridge banned in Scotland!!

Northernsouloldies · 01/03/2024 20:06

The face painting loons will be going nuts.😂

Ugh I want independence and hate the tories but am politically homeless. No idea who to vote for, SNP are bonkers as are the greens. Will need to spoil my ballot as I can't vote for any of the others. Scotland is fast becoming a joke.

BigBoysDontCry · 01/03/2024 20:20

If SNP say "porridge bad" then it won't be long before the lunatics are spouting the same crap. Gullible, deluded and thick as shit in the neck of a bottle.

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 01/03/2024 20:20

@BonnieBairn I'm in exactly the same position. Politically homeless.

“Breakfast cereals (including ready-to-eat cereals, granola, muesli, porridge oats and other oat-based cereals).”

https://www.gov.scot/publications/restricting-promotions-food-drink-high-fat-sugar-salt-consultation-detail-proposed-regulations/pages/3/

I’m baffled at the plain porridge oats. Why? The sweetened or UP types make sense.

Kalevala · 01/03/2024 20:27

WandaWonder · 01/03/2024 11:55

I believe basic porridge is not included but all that instant stuff with added sugar and other bits

I've never seen bags or boxes of plain rolled oats on promotion anyway, the price is the price. It's the sachets that you see on special. You can get the plain version in sachets too, but it's mostly the sugared, flavoured stuff.

Lifebeganat50 · 01/03/2024 20:29

Yet another fucking tax dressed up as saving us from ourselves

Absolute fucking loons, the lot of them

Kalevala · 01/03/2024 20:31

alonglongshot · 01/03/2024 19:06

Without meal deals many of us won't be able to afford lunch from a supermarket. 😔

You just buy bread, your filling of choice, and you can make sandwiches for a week. Even in a bedsit without a fridge you can buy peanut butter or marmite. No one needs a meal deal.

Northernsouloldies · 01/03/2024 20:37

Thick as shit in the neck of a bottle....I've not heard that in years.. cheers bigboysdontcry.😁😂

BeethovenNinth · 01/03/2024 20:39

This government is the pits

ResilienceWanker · 01/03/2024 20:44

To be fair, and much as I hate implying that the SNP aren't all fucking batshit crazy, there are regulations in England restricting the same classes of food. https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2021/1368/contents/made (schedule 1).

At the moment in England, big shops haven't been allowed to display porridge etc prominently since 2022, and they were intending on preventing bogofs too, but delayed that til 2025 'cos of the cost of living etc and because they realized it made them look like miserable wankers . Wales is likely to introduce the same regulations, though may also bring meal deals and temporary reductions into scope like Scotland is consulting on. So yes, Scotland is putting its own Presbyterian stamp on it, but it isn't totally on its own in wanting to limit promotions on these things.

Still don't know what anyone has against proper, oat based porridge though. I honestly thought it was one of the healthiest things you could eat. Which is why it is only palatable made with really creamy milk and drizzled with something sweet and sticky to make it much, much less healthy.

The Food (Promotion and Placement) (England) Regulations 2021

These Regulations provide for restrictions on the marketing in a store or on an online marketplace of certain foods and drinks that are less healthy.

DuesToTheDirt · 01/03/2024 20:49

Seriously? I'm going to move to my own island, where I will create a big porridge art installation. Then I will invite all the people who came up with this shite to come over and watch me eat it. And I won't share!

byteme1011 · 01/03/2024 20:51

Also says '31. Our proposed approach is consistent with the food categories within scope of the regulations for England and with the Welsh Government's proposed approach, as set out in its consultation.' - never seen your bog standard porridge oats on bogof and I buy them every week and have done for over 15 years

https://www.gov.wales/sites/default/files/consultations/2022-05/consultation-document_1.pdf

Timetodownsize · 01/03/2024 21:17

I buy Mornflake rolled oats and in Tesco they are on "Clubcard" price so is that a promotion ? I used to buy Quaker Oat so Simple - again usually when it was bogof in Tesco but only the plain variety - so banning promotions will presumably impact on those and yet these are decent breakfast/snack options.

Anyway I agree - it would be far far better to spend the money on cookery classes in school or in community settings.

Fucks sake my autistic child eats pastry for breakfast daily for ten years this has been a safe breakfast for him he weighs the same as a bag of fluff its not going to hurt him to eat this leave food alone people need to eat

Tax something they don't need like mps second homes or something

I have a friend whose granddaughter has PKU. The campaign to reduce sugar wiped out a significant proportion of foods she could previously eat as they swapped sugar for sweeteners.
