The Murray's in Edinburgh

Just that really. Long shot as it's so specific but anyone got any insight or lives there and has feedback? We're looking at relocating to Edinburgh and a house has come up that would work for us, but looks like the sellers aren't budging on the price they're holding out for and in a falling property market I feel like they're asking too much (it's already been on the market for ~4 months).

Tentative about offering the full price as it's a huge stretch.

Just looking for anyone's opinions on the area - how it would be to live there with young kids and dogs.

I don't know it very well, but it's definitely a popular area and close to quite a lot of amenities. Easy to get out to the country but probably a long commute if you're working in the city centre.
Secondary catchment is Gracemount High School which has a very mixed demographic. In terms of league tables it wouldn't be high up, but that's not the only measure I would rate a school by!

@weebarra easy to get out to the country is definitely a huge draw for us. We both work from home so the commute isn't an issue, from what I've heard it's easy enough but the buses are packed at commute hours. Useful to know about Gracemount High School.

I don't think the market is particularly falling in Edinburgh! Is the value they're holding out for above the valuation report price? There's a lot of new builds in that neck of the woods too, how does the price compare with those? The houses in the Murrays are now of an age where I'd expect they could start needing work such as new kitchens, bathrooms and boilers etc.

There is an issue with the sewage pipes on Lasswade Road just up from The Murrays - possibly caused by the new build in the area but the smell is a reoccurring theme on the local Facebook pages.
There are no local shops. You will need to drive to buy a pint of milk.
The estate is "shared spaces" so there are no pavements. I'd be wary of this if I had young DC.
Gracemount High doesn't have the best reputation but Gracemount Leisure Centre is fab.
You may find it challenging to find a local GP/dentist - another reoccurring theme on Facebook - especially from the occupiers of the new build.
It's super close to the bypass.

I used to live there. No local shops, nothing for kids to do, crappy schools. The other residents were hugely unfriendly. We left after 2 years!

I think the above posts make good points about the location. If I was looking at that sort of price range for a 4 bed family home I think i'd rather live in one of the "villages" in Midlothian.

weebarra · 07/12/2023 09:09

I was going to ask if you'd looked at Midlothian? Definitely a more community feel in many areas and I've had a generally positive experience of the schools.
If you use the borders railway it's quick into Edinburgh.
What's your budget?

Heatherbell1978 · 08/12/2023 19:24

Not far from where I live in Midlothian but I'd echo the schools thing. If league tables are your thing, Gracemount isn't particularly high up there. The Murray's used to just sit there on its own at the top of the hill but in recent years there's been lots of building around it though so probably more of a community developing. But a bit of a walk to shops.

Just tried to back up what I'm about to say with some links but Google is failing me. I remember for a while, maybe around 10 years ago this estate was often in the news for shady things taking place there or by some of the residents. Someone else might have more detail but I see a poster has recommended against.
