Got visitors coming and we live in east Lothian. I’m so out of ideas, I know it’s lovely and all, but it feels like I’ve done it to death, due to various life stuff happening.
Please anyone have any ideas ? I thought gullane, beach and clubhouse, north Berwick beach and chips. I’m bored already. Is it possible to kayak or...I dunno. Where’s nice to eat? Help! Visitors are adults used to exciting city and nervous about the cold 🙄
oh belhaven bay is lovely....anywhere nice to eat in Dunbar..?
tyninghame is nice.
is there anywhere..off the beaten track so to speak?
many thanks indeed!

Hectors pizza in Dunbar was fab! Also had a lovely meal at the Bayswell Park Hotel a few years ago. Fox lake is fab of course but not really suitable or open fully in winter - they do a sauna & cold plunge if that's your thing.

Archerfield Walled Garden and Fairy Walk
Tynninghame Beach and Smithy
Drift Cafe (just outside North Berwick)
Dirleton Castle
Tantallon Castle
Yellowcraigs Beach. Lovely little Cafe just before it.
Gullane Beach. Chips from the Fryer
The Open Arms, Dirleton
Museum of Flight
Barns Ness Beach.
Carfrae Farm Shop. It's a lovely drive up to it.
North Berwick Harbour
Walking around Gosford Estate
Gosford Bothy Farm Shop
Longniddry Bents (and the wee coffee horse box)
Hailes Castle and Bostock Bakery at East Linton. Hailes Castle there too if you fancy a walk.
Smeaton Garden Nursery Tearooms. Lovely cafe in the Walled Garden and you can walk around the lake.
Amisfield Walled Garden

There's others but likely to be shut this time of year or are Historic Scotland sites not open due to the high level masonry works.

Waitwhat23 · 04/12/2023 00:24

Oh, forgot Whitekirk Hill as well.

Waitwhat23 · 04/12/2023 00:30

Oh, and it's Midlothian I think but Carberry Tower is quite special.

Ehwot · 05/12/2023 22:55

Thank you! There’s a few new ones there, so thank you!
i find being the host such a massive responsibility- I’m always worried we are not doing the funnest thing. Silly I know, need to relax! 🙄

Whitecastle? Will be chilly but great views and excellent ditches for running round

Ehwot · 06/12/2023 21:25

Ooh thank you, haven’t heard of white castle! It looks fab. And you’ve just reminded me of yester castle and the dungeon thingy. Thank you!

Think I got a bit glum, family stuff, but guests are lovely and seeing things through fresh eyes. Thank you guys!

I think Yester Castle was shut to the public a couple of years ago due to the theft of a substantial amount of stone and AFAIK, it's still inaccessible.

A shame because it really is a weird and wonderful place to visit.

The Gobin Ha' is also currently shut.

snoopyfanaccountant · 07/12/2023 20:01

NB Distillery near North Berwick if you like gin.
Seabird Centre in North Berwick.

Waitwhat23 · 07/12/2023 20:42

Glenkinchie Distillery if you like Whisky. They also now have a bar where you can get drinks and sharing platters.

Ehwot · 09/12/2023 06:51

waitwhat aw no, that’s a shame about yester, it was really weird and scary.
i loved that about here is there are castles just lying about. In southern England they’d be festooned with ticket offices and tea rooms.
guests don’t drink! but agree they are good visitor stuff.
thank you!

Hailes castle and a walk along the river? Traprain Law and the wild ponies, geese at Aberlady?

Or a walk at Cove near Dunbar?

Ehwot · 12/12/2023 21:53

Actually yes to all! I’d forgotten how nice it can all be. Cove is amazing. . I’ve got a bit jaded, we walked around loads when DH was recovering from serious disasters and it all got linked in my head with being miserable af. But just looking at this list is amazing! We live in virtual Disney land - deer, seals, rabbits, wild strawberries.. and good pubs, though if anyone can recommend any, very welcome! ESP. For Sunday lunch.

Ehwot · 12/12/2023 21:55

Recommend craigie law golf club, bit old fashioned, but nice nosh and a great view.

My favourite Sunday lunch is at the Garvald Inn. Really good food, and quite an old-fashioned vibe but I like that sort of thing. Must go back soon!

Ehwot · 13/12/2023 07:04

Ooh thank you, haven’t heard of that. We susally ( very rarely!) go to gullane clubhouse, it is great to hear of some recommendations!
