Why can't we keep Scottish oil?

pharmachameleon · 02/10/2023 08:11

I'll start off by saying I am against Scottish independence on economic grounds. Voted no in 2014 and haven't changed my mind. However I was out with a friend at the weekend who is for Scottish independence and I didn't really have the answers to the discussions we had.
We were talking specifically about oil (we did have fun really-this was the only serious topic we discussed!) He said in 2014 one of the big arguments from the unionist side was 'THERE IS NO OIL LEFT' however now with the new oil contact granted in Rosebank this argument has been disproved.
Can I play devil's advocate and ask why can't Scotland keep the revenues from oil drilled off Scottish waters? I realise these waters are UK waters however why can't they be Scottish? Ignoring the net zero targets of course!
I realise this question makes me sound like an idiot so I'd never ask it in real life-only on anonymous Mumsnet! Can anyone help me understand?

Although I didn't vote blue (and definitely not yellow) they still retained the seat in my area.
Quite gleeful this morning watching both parties I detest (SNP and Tories) get a hammering!

Looks like oil and gas is going to stay UK for a good while longer thankfully and the "clear mandate" for SNP and independence has been well and truly kicked into the grass in this election!

Why do you detest the SNP? (out of interest, their policies are extremely good from what I've read in comparison to Labour or the now 'collapsed' Tory Party)

The bulk of the money from the oil is long gone. Thatcher pissed it up the wall in tax cuts.

Incorrect. Over a CENTURY of lucrative, recoverable Scottish North Sea Oil at today's rates. This year is the biggest Scottish Oil find in 20 years:

Scotland is a very wealthy nation and without Scottish oil revenue, the English Pound Sterling will likely fall to less than $1 USD

Because they bang on about independence and use it as an excuse for their failures on devolved issues.
Education standards have gone down the pan (the stats show this), NHS Scotland has got worse (they are in charge of this), ferries are a expensive disaster leaving communities cut off and they try to force central belt and city policies on rural areas which are set up very differently (including our power/heating systems in Winter storms!) Their financial ability is lower then primary school levels and they try to hide things.

They spent years being pretty smug and saying but the Tories turns out they were pretty corrupt also with ongoing police investigations into finances and a campervan!
They shouted from the roof tops that changes in PM should call an election as not voted in then do exactly the same thing and go very quiet on it.

Covid was a nightmare and again scaremongering from them including Humza who said attending a softplay risked children ending up in hospital....(which again was a complete lie)

The only reason there are any energy problems in Scotland is because of the Uk, this is why people in Scotland cant have their heating on while huge amounts of Scotland Energy is exported (free of charge) to England or sold on the World Energy Markets. Nothing to do with the SNP;

The British Government DOUBLED the United Kingdom Debts whilst forcing austerity on the people of the UK. Austerity is ideologically driven and there is no need for it. I am surprised you aren't attacking the British nationalists in England for what they've done. England 9and while its a part of it Scotland) are drowning in debt and you are paying the highest taxes since 1946!

The UK (Englands) debt is now 2.7 Trillion and rising.

Highest Debts Since WWII

UK government debt rises above 100% of GDP for first time since 1961

In blow to Rishi Sunak’s plans to cut taxes before general election, net debt reached £2.6tn at of end of May

I think the 'Campervan' investigation will be shown for what it most likely is; 'nonsense' so I am not worried about that. I think if I were a British/Scottish person I would wonder where all the Uk money has gone during Covid and Brexit.

Scaremongering? I think being prudent about safety is a good thing, and I dont think they were 'scaremongering' at all.

Boris Johnson threw parties and said 'let the bodies pile high'

So none of the things you have said really pan out, and they're really public knowledge at this point.

Still doesnt explain why you dont like the SNP.

RobG · 05/07/2024 19:48

RobG · 28/06/2024 04:06

Heheheh! 😀

It is very recent. If there has been 56 years of oil industry and they didnt implement the main part of their oil fund until 1990, it was 23 years into that 56 year arc!

The Norwegians didnt make the brunt of their massive wealth until the second half of this era.

How much money does Scotland have? None.

How much money does England have? None

Scotland has produced MORE oil than Norway and More oil than Kuwait.

The Uk's debt doubled from around 1 Trillion pounds to 2.5 Trillion and climbing.
So why does Norway have money and the Uk has nothing? (and that is a rhetorical question, I already know why)

But of course you will continue to disagree with me, and blahblahblah... lol!

You keep saying I dont understand 🤣 lol

You are mistaken, or you are merely here to agitate.

I wish you and England well. In the next ten years you will need it. Most especially when Scotland leaves the Uk. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Goodbye. I wish you well 😊

I explained perfectly and yes scaremongering Humza had to issue an apology for his words.
It was also catalogued how the SNP ignored scientific advice from anyone which didn't sing their narrative.

If you live in Scotland then you will be fully aware of some of the absurb suggestions including cutting the bottoms of doors off in Schools.

I don't think a full blown police investigation and charges being brought is nonsense.
I suggest reading into ferry delays and the damage it is causing to Islanders and their local economy.

You explained and demonstrated clearly why reading the Daily Mail isnt a good idea. 😉

I gave links to sources that shows Scotland has:

  1. the best NHS in the UK

  2. its young people are the best educated in Western Europe

Humza was more or less discredited and made to stand down by his own party. I think he was leader of Scotland for only 1 year!

You didnt engage with the questions I asked about Englands Parliament BANKRUPTING the whole United Kingdom I notice, and I dont expect you to either😉

The Ferries? if you live on an Island, and you dont own a boat, then be prepared in the event of the ferries not running. (I had friends on Islay who did exactly that)

AFAIK Cal Mac operate an otherwise 'platinum' ferry service and have done for decades.

But you do sound like someone who wants to attack Scotland and the SNP. Not really a surprise on this webpage.

"it was also catalogued how the SNP ignored scientific advice from anyone which didn't sing their narrative." -sources?

I think you just want to have a go. You might not even be Scottish. I know there is a mass migration from other parts of the Uk to Scotland right now, as so many people are escaping England and its collapsing services.

By all means dont be thankful for the BEST NHS IN THE UK

And by all means dont attack WESTMINSTER for doubling the Uk debt.

-just keep banging on about ferries. TBH I think you lack perspective. 😀

I'm not scottish but I've lived here for over 14 years. My children are born here and in the education system.

Yes your right it is well documented in the enquiries about ignoring advice which didnt fit the narrative she wanted of elimination. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/01/22/sturgeon-ignored-scientific-advice-on-covid/

Also not a daily mail reader.
Your comments in regard to Island communities just shows pure ignorance. You do know people are missing cancer treatments because of issues with them? Local economies are severely suffering etc etc.

I mean your rose tinted spectacles have been dipped in pink unicorn glitter with half of what you are spouting.

Again, you IGNORE the main things I cited in our discussion;

You say nothing about the English Government in London but you attack the SNP.

Have you considered moving to Wales?

Its run by the British Labour Party as far as I know, it sounds like you dont like Scotlands choice of government.

You do know the standard of living across the board in Scotland is about the best in the United Kingdom? You are aware of this?

The SNP are responsible for that.

I doubt people are missing chemo treatments because of Cal-Mac, and my friends in Lewis have told me that unless you got by helicopter, you will be 12 hours being driven to a hospital if you have a heart attack (god forbid)

Part of living on an Island and one of the many reasons I stayed on the Scottish mainland.

You do sound like a fairly typical British Nationalist, but again, if you dont like Scotland and its political choices, you can obviously just move.

Might be worth thinking about as Scotland doesnt sound like its for you.

If you do leave though, there will be about 8 or 9 people willing to take your place to live in Scotland, loads of Uk nationals moving from England and Wales to Scotland right now;
