Why can't we keep Scottish oil?

pharmachameleon · 02/10/2023 08:11

I'll start off by saying I am against Scottish independence on economic grounds. Voted no in 2014 and haven't changed my mind. However I was out with a friend at the weekend who is for Scottish independence and I didn't really have the answers to the discussions we had.
We were talking specifically about oil (we did have fun really-this was the only serious topic we discussed!) He said in 2014 one of the big arguments from the unionist side was 'THERE IS NO OIL LEFT' however now with the new oil contact granted in Rosebank this argument has been disproved.
Can I play devil's advocate and ask why can't Scotland keep the revenues from oil drilled off Scottish waters? I realise these waters are UK waters however why can't they be Scottish? Ignoring the net zero targets of course!
I realise this question makes me sound like an idiot so I'd never ask it in real life-only on anonymous Mumsnet! Can anyone help me understand?

You can believe or disbelieve all you like. As you know, people can claim anything and spraff whatever shite they can bang out on a keyboard with their hairy hands. It makes no odds to me one way or another what you believe or don't 🤷

However, just for your future adventures in trying to come across knowledgeable and relevant, no one in Scotland would ever refer to themselves as The Scottish, that's an absolute fact. The Scottish people maybe but never The Scottish. And calling people The English (unless you are Amish) is also derogatory.

So you are now speaking on behalf of EVERYONE in Scotland? lol!

Nice to meet you Prime Minister 'Swinney', I like your policies very much! 🤣

The Scottish usually refer to themselves as 'The Scots', but they are in fact 'The Scottish' and some people there do refer to themselves that way.

Perhaps your hands are 'hairy'? 😉

Calling people 'The English' is derogatory? How so? I call people in France 'The French' they dont seem to mind

(psst. I thought you were meant to be Scottish!) 😉

As I asked; Are you saying Scotland ISNT a country?

Are you saying England ISNT a country? lol!

BigBoysDontCry · 01/07/2024 22:34

I didn't say anything about what entities were countries or not. I pointed out that you are using a term that no one in the UK would ever use to refer to people in Scotland and calling people The English would be seen as derogatory. But then an educated person who is definitely not a Russian bot would of course know that. 🤷

Keir Starmer (Sir) is a knight of the British Realm and a Tory.

Not terribly interested in his views. 😊

I doubt the Scottish will be either. (I dont live in England)

A lot of Scottish people are very concerned about Labours plans of covering not just Scotland but England in unsightly pylons and turbines which are not needed but driven by the mad green ideology which is going to bankrupt us .
Apart from some community turbines and a few private ones they are all owned by Foreign Companies .

Yes. Much like Englands water supply. It's tragic that people in England allowed their resources to be privatised. I agree.

In Europe they bury their power lines, -no 'Super Pylons' I have friends who live in the Highlands. Most of the energy wont stay in Scotland.

If I'm a 'bot' (I'm not one of 'The Russians' -or will the people of Russia see that reference as offensive too? If you're not Swinney, are you Putin? lol) 🤣🤣🤣 You're certainly not Scottish, thats for sure.

So many comedians on this forum 😀 lol!

Most people have bigger things to worry about.

How to keep a roof over their head and feed their family being quite high on the agenda.

Ocharina · 02/07/2024 15:37

The bulk of the money from the oil is long gone. Thatcher pissed it up the wall in tax cuts.

What rubbish! It was mainly spent on paying for the welfare state.

(Of the United Kingdom which as the Scots nats on this thread are only too acutely aware includes Scotland. The resources belong to the United Kingdom).

Cutting basic rate income tax to 25% and top rate to 40% in Nigel Lawson's 1987 and 1988 budgets saw Income Tax revenues rise. This was when North Sea oil revenues were at their highest and the increased IT receipts were higher.

Again you overlook the fact that it's the Scottish government (aka SNP) who are the sanctioners of these projects including giant pylons. Also the same people who undersold the offshore wind areas in the first place which all of the new pylons are required to connect to.

Or is the independent focused govt completely ignored for their involvement in all of this because it doesn't fit the narrative of England bad Scottish independence good?!

If you think for ONE second that people in Scotland are better off being ruled by unelected parties in London, goodbye and good luck! 🤣🤣🤣

As to the pylons, -because all of Scotland's money goes to London, they are having to do what they can afford to (for now) with a view of burying the cables at a later date. Pylon cables can carry approx a third more energy than underground or subsea.

Holyrood can only work within the budgets it is given by unelected parties in the south of England.

.Energy Pylons

Where are the new Scottish pylons and powerlines, and why do we need them?

1,800 km of new line, £20 billion of investment. The North of Scotland's electricity grid is about to expand over the coming years. Where is it…

They are covering Scotland in turbines so they get the business rates and rents and gripped by green ideologies which will bankrupt us as businesses move out .
Please see what’s happening in Germany .

Snp are financially incompetent . They increased income tax and lost money as Kate Forbes had forgotten about the Barnet formula so at most basically they don’t understand money.

If business doesn’t operate the economy slumps there won’t be jobs or handouts . Economy keeps a roof over our head . If SNP were fiscally literate they wouldn’t have had to hand back £119 million they got from EU to help with poverty in Scotland . They’ve had to hand back around £450 million to Eu as their fiscal trails were incompetent and they hadn’t given the money to correct bodies .

"Snp are financially incompetent" -Tories DOUBLED the UK debt.

Labour have the same policies.

Who would you recommend people in Scotland vote for? Theres no point in just attacking the SNP who have out performed every other Uk Party.

annabelindajane · 03/07/2024 21:41

For anyone in NEast it has to be conservative as they are only ones to fight our corner for oil industry and are wakening up to the ‘green’ ideologies and the vast costs involved . Even Labour have privately admitted it’s going to cost us 100 s of billions and to what end ? Not more jobs and won’t keep the lights on .

Who thinks it’s a good idea to cover Skye in Pylons ??

North East of where? ~Do you mean Scotland or England?

The Conservatives havent been voted for in Scotland since 1956, and theyre quite likely not going to exist in Scotland after todays election.

Practically no one will vote for the Conservatives either in Scotland or in England.

-but nice try 😉 🤣🤣🤣

Again, its ENGLAND that CANT keep its lights on, not Scotland.

SueDonnym · 04/07/2024 12:20

If you looked at the map of party constituencies you’d see a huge band of blue across the south of Scotland - - maybe you think the border runs from Ayr to gullane

annabelindajane · 04/07/2024 15:16

North East of Scotland- why would I be talking about England ?

Conservatives are only party that relates to our issues here and no 1 is the oil industry which actually affects us all due to tax receipts .If Oil industry is further run down then the highly skilled mobile workers will head off overseas ( and we wont get their tax ) and we shall be left with high unemployment and all that follows . Then indeed keeping a roof over our heads will be main concern .

The shortsighted wont see this .

Liverpoolma123 · 04/07/2024 15:34

Yes please all vote for the millionaire who resides in Santa Monica.

FFS

He doesn't give two s*it's about the life of anyone living in Scotland. Why would he?!

florafoxtrot · 04/07/2024 15:54

For goodness sakes there is more to the NE than the oil industry! Saying this as someone that worked in it for 15 years.

Fishing, farming, whisky, tourism? All huge industries and all hugely impacted by the Tories and the massive fuck up that is Brexit.

Vote for who you like but I would rather have a “monster pylon” in my front garden than vote Tory after the shitshow of the last 16 years.

Yes. I would agree with you also! 👍

-monster pylons can (eventually) be taken down.
