East Renfrewshire or East Dunbartonshire - where to move?

Hi all

DH and I are considering moving to Glasgow. We are looking at East Renfrewshire and East Dunbartonshire to buy our home mainly due to schooling and good location. I have been researching which area to live in and both seem to be on par from what I’ve read. This has led me totally unsure about which area to go for.

If anyone could please let me know of their experiences and if they have any recommendations

thank you

I don't think there's much to choose between them. I'm a west-ender so would automatically choose Bearsden as that's what I know but you'll get plenty arguments for the other side! Do you need access to anywhere else easily? Edinburgh or Ayrshire? That might help inform your decision.

DH family lives in Edinburgh so as long as we are about max 1hr 30mins away I think we’re good

Could you tell me a bit more about bearsden? Is there lots of restaurants, shops amenities etc near by?

We're in Bearsden - very happy here, have been here about 15 years. In terms of amenities - brand new sports centre with pool just opened at the Allander, new PureGym opening soon, tennis clubs (two), dry ski slope. Lots of football, rugby, other sports clubs for sporting children. Scouts, Guides and Boys/Girls Brigade all thriving, dance clubs, drama clubs etc etc etc. Lots of coffee shops at Bearsden Cross, more in Milngavie which is just a mile or so up the road, restaurants come and go as I think hospitality in general is really struggling at the moment but there are a couple of good Indians at the cross plus the excellent Mother India deli, a new tapas restaurant just opened last weekend, Italian, pubs. Shops there is Waitrose, Asda, Aldi, Tesco in Milngavie, M&S foods. Independent butcher/greengrocer, gift shops etc. Home Bargains, Majestic Wine etc.

From here you are 25 minutes into town, 25 minutes to Loch Lomond. Places like Giffnock or Newton Mearns have a very similar vibe/feel to them with similar styles of housing so agree with others that one is not better than the other, it's just what suits you best. I would always tell anyone thinking of making a move to get up here and spend some time mooching around, spend at least a couple of days in each place in and out of the shops, looking around the streets to get a feel for what suits you best.

One thing to be aware of though is the pressure on school places, you really have to plan to buy in catchment for the schools you want as placing requests are becoming increasingly difficult, if not impossible in some cases.

I'd go for East Ren as it's an easier trip to Edinburgh - along the East Kilbride expressway to the M8.

Takes me 1 hour door-to-door (am in northwest Edinburgh) to visit family. Not in rush hour of course.

East ren nearer the west coast beaches and bearsden nearer the trossachs. So whatever's your preference there.

Rainbowshit · 23/09/2023 09:43

We're in east Ren which suits us as we're up and down the road to family in England frequently.

East ren has a real 'sprawl' feel to it. Lots of it is just endless housing estates that do t relate to each other. But the schools are probably a bit better. Giffnock or Eagleshsm sound be my first choice here. Giffnock has shops and a centre. Feels marginally cosmopolitan compared to Newton Mearns.

ED has scenery. Mugdick, Loch Lomond
