Inspired by the very Irish things thread on Craignet.

My parents are Scottish so I grew up hearing these things but not using as English people don’t. On moving to Fife for uni I came across a few phrases.
Furtid Cloots.
Where do you stay.
How are you going there.
Macaroni pies.
Stovies.
Wet brown sauce.

Also the East coast.

JennyTheDonkey · 27/07/2023 10:43

Ok the school question is more widespread then, always thought in Edinburgh it was to see if you'd been at state or private.

Big yes to all soft drinks being 'juice'.

PollyThePixie · 27/07/2023 10:44

She’s no affy weel.

She’s affy no weel.

The latter usually said under the breath with an accompanying twitch of the nose to make it very clear the person was doomed.

My folks (Glasgow) still call the swimming pool ‘the baths!’
I love it!

’Hen’ - term of endearment for girl/woman.

Very much in Dundee.

And also used by DC Thomsons as a means of weeding out Catholics when going through job application way way back in the day.

Mrsjayy · 27/07/2023 10:51

My dad talks about the back press but tbh I'm not sure what he's on about. I think he means the kitchen🤷‍♀️

Teajenny7 · 27/07/2023 10:51

Where do you stay.

On a positive note my butcher in the deep deep South sells square sausage. Sometimes the squared sausage has haggis in the middle.

The local sweet shop sells tablet

maldivemoment · 27/07/2023 10:51

Fond memories of my gran calling her hall cupboard ‘the lobby press’

Tarkan · 27/07/2023 10:52

Give the dog a clap (or should I say gie the wee dug a clap). Grin

I used it on here recently and confused a lot of people. Blush

CindersAgain · 27/07/2023 10:53

Clap the dog
Bucket to mean bin
Stair instead of stairs

CindersAgain · 27/07/2023 10:53

Ha, cross post.

Tallisker · 27/07/2023 10:53

I miss living in Scotland 🥲

KeepSmiling89 · 27/07/2023 10:53

@PollyThePixie I agree...very much Dundee as well. My mum always talks about being brought up Catholic and the rivalry between protestant and catholic schools.
She jokes now "I was raised Catholic, but I'm better now!"
