Hmm wonder if she's lining herself up to be leader of the SNP at some point? Definitely not the last we'll see of her unfortunately.

OP posts:

MB would be better off doing sleb reality shows and writing bile-spouting columns in some toe-rag newspaper - that way she can mouth off and be as offensive as she likes without having to do any real work for a constituency. I think that would suit her down to ground.

Maybe she worked in a chippy at uni? Nothing unusual there. Maybe she's talking like her pals talk rather than her neighbours when she grew up? I don't know either way, i just hate the assumption you should talk a certain way if you're from a certain area. My kids don't talk the same as their pals but grew up in the same place.

Anyway, i don't really know enough about MB to have an indepth discussion here, other than a recent speech in the house of commons i agreed

She has the worst voting and attendance record of any MP at Westminster and has done naff all for her constituents!
She likes the limelight not the actual work!

I don't believe in the Westminster are terrible so we would be better at it alone argument. If you think prices are high now such as food throw in economic instability and they will sky rocket with tariffs, a hard boarder and less buying power. We can't live off potatoes, oat, barley, protein and whiskey! Nor strawberries and raspberries in the summer which is a majority of scottish agricultural system which would be the only slightly cheaper produce.

BigBoysDontCry · 06/07/2023 11:45

This constant harping on about WM and the tories just shows how much people have been duped.

The majority of what matters to the general public, health, education, policing etc is already under the control of Scotgov/SNP and they've done a fecking poor job of everything they've touched apart from creating 2 million grevience junkies convinced that the answer to the question no-one asked is independence.

I can guarantee that none of the top level in the SNP give a shiny shite about independence. It's a lever they've used to get and stay in power and convinced people that they care more when in reality they care only for themselves.

Lionoso · 06/07/2023 11:48

I have friends who live in her constituency, she has a really poor reputation as an MP when it comes to helping constituents.

Making grand standing speeches from the green benches sounds good, but an MPs primary job is to represent their constituents.

Well these same constituents thought it was a good idea to choose a 20 year old student to represent them ........ what did they expect?

Everyone saying she doesn't help constituents do you really think she sees every piece of work she gets.
My DH was a Constituency Manager for an MP, they only actually see a tiny percent of their work load, that being "interesting" cases or work that will get them seen in a positive light in local press.
Believe me, I've seen it in action.

ssd · 06/07/2023 17:51

@BigBoysDontCry, of course politicians only care about themselves, doesn't everyone know that?!?

As for the 'constantly harping on' about Westminster, there's absolutely no one who can compare Johnson, Sunak etcetera with SNP, well with most other governments in Europe, and not find them utterly corrupt and totally incompetent. The SNP have done plenty ridiculous, shite, underhand things, but it totally doesn't come close to the events happening/happened down south.
And no amount of personal insults will ever convince me otherwise.

Mojoj · 06/07/2023 18:19

stealtheatingtunnocks · 04/07/2023 18:08

She called us cunts, @ssd.

Well, are you?

BigBoysDontCry · 06/07/2023 18:34

We are going to have to disagree @ssd I'm not denying that sunak etc are gobshites, but the SNP are worse and it's them that are responsible for what happens in Scotland. The tories don't try to hide or deny who they are.

SNP pretend that they are for the poor whilst shafting them at every turn. Their level of incompetence and corruption is unparalleled and the impact on every individual is higher due to the smaller population.

Labour are no better imo and also don't deserve our vote and I say that as a lifong socialist. Oh for the days of competent, intelligent, trustworthy leaders, I doubt we will see any in top positions anywhere in politics across the world.

well said.
Also, Mhairi Black has her faults but unless someone uncovers some secret recording of her talking like Jacob Rees-Mogg somewhere, I don't know how anyone on here can know that her accent is 'fake'. The way she talks just sounds completely normal to me and how most folk talk. Is she meant to speak more posh just because her mum's a (oh my God can you believe it!!) teacher and her dad's a, oh the shock, oh the horror!! A social worker??? Totally bizarre. As to frying fish - any reference i've heard her make of it is in the same conversation she's talked about being at uni - so, hardly trying to pretend that that's her 'vocation' as suggested on here.

SirChenjins · 06/07/2023 21:00

How most folk talk? Who’s most folk?

What the hell has working p/t in a chippy as a student got to do with anything? ‘I worked in a chippy, now I’m an MP’. No love, you were a full time student, had a p/t job like many students do, and now you’re an MP (and a shite one at that). I suppose she thought full time student didn’t quite have the working class cachet she was aiming for.

happygolurkey · 06/07/2023 21:16

ok, most people i know don't speak that differently to Mhairi Black - I talk much like her myself, as do most of my family, friends, neighbours, colleagues - whether they be teachers, social workers or any other job.

I wholeheartedly agree with you when you say what the hell has being a student and working in a chippie got to do with anything....that's why I'm puzzled as to why there's a whole thread almost entirely focusing on it??

I'm also puzzled as to your last statement - that's in fact what she has said isn't it? - she was studying for a degree and worked in a chippie before being an MP

SirChenjins · 06/07/2023 21:45

She doesn’t talk like most folk I know.

No, she doesn’t talk about being a student as her main occupation when she’s talking about becoming an MP. “OK. But the book deals!” she continues. “I had people wanting me to write an autobiography: I was born. I went to school. I left. I fried a fish. And now I’m an MP. They were offering me a four-book deal!” and “When I first spoke at conference it was roughly a year ago and it was just after the referendum. The second time I spoke I did so as a parliamentary candidate. The third time I am now speaking to conference as a member of the UK parliament. The reason I mention this journey because it is symbolic of what has happened in Scotland over the the last year. The idea that a then 20-year old chip shop fryer could become a MP would have been laughed at, but not anymore” for example.

But what do I know - I’m a cunt, according to her.

ssd · 06/07/2023 21:45

I really haven't a clue about this as i haven't looked into it, but surely she didn't say she only worked in a chippy then became an MP? With absolutely no reference to going to Glasgow uni? Wasn't it said in context?

SirChenjins · 06/07/2023 21:46

Read my previous post.

ssd · 06/07/2023 21:55

Fair enough.

ssd · 06/07/2023 22:13

At least Andy Murray's playing great.

Christ we need something to cheer us up. The rains battering off the windows here and its grim.

SirChenjins · 06/07/2023 22:18

He really is! 🤞

We’re on holiday and the weather is brilliant but I can see on the Ring app that the garden back home is sitting under water. Oh joy.

ssd · 06/07/2023 22:38

Enjoy your holiday and bring the sun home with you please!!

SirChenjins · 06/07/2023 22:43

I will do my best, I promise!

Merrilydancing · 06/07/2023 22:55

I think most people automatically change their accent to suit their surroundings it’s perfectly normal to do so in order to be understood.

If I spoke in my Scottish non central belt accent most people wouldn’t understand me!

So yes I do judge someone who seemingly doesn’t understand the need to do so as once again it shrieks of middle classes patronising the working class by trying to pretend that they are like them.

happygolurkey · 06/07/2023 23:03

think she was making a joke that at aged 20 she didn't really warrant a book deal for her autobiography. That same article you quote from mentions she got a first in Politics and Public Policy that summer, so she could hardly have been trying to hide the fact

Yolo12345 · 06/07/2023 23:14

Daughter of a teacher and a social worker ...in Glasgow...state educated and that makes her "not very working class"....I'm actually speechless...! Well she might have a bit more of a clue than a lot of the other toffs in Westminster jaysus!

Fandabedodgy · 06/07/2023 23:19

Cocaine habit and an appalling attendance record.

Would fit right in with SNP leadership
