Hmm wonder if she's lining herself up to be leader of the SNP at some point? Definitely not the last we'll see of her unfortunately.

All this talk of her being middle class and speaking in a different accent is the worst type of mn snobbery going. Discussing where she was brought up and went to school and how she shouldn't speak how she does.

Don't be ridiculous. The criticism of MB isn't snobbery. The criticism is MB's pretending to be down trodden working class when she's from a very middle class background.

MichelleScarn · 05/07/2023 15:11

No no no @maybebalancing haven't you had your indoctrination yet?
SNP whatever they do goooood
Something goes wrong or is bad? A big boy did it and ran away!

"I wanna live like common people..."

You don't agree with Jarvis's criticism of well off people cosplaying as poorer people then?

LadinLee · 05/07/2023 15:46

I never understood why anyone voted for a 20 year old student to represent them. Whatever political party, it seems madness. Particularly since we know brain isn't fully cognitively developed in under 25 yr olds!

I have a 20 yr old student and the idea of them being aware of all the wider factors at play in a situation is laughable. Very likely just to parrot what they've been told/read.
Virtually everything someone that age knows about is out a text book, little real lived experience of important issues.
Probably why we don't hear much from her.
Don't know what the constituents were thinking of.

BlueThursday · 05/07/2023 17:53

@LadinLee agree and particularly when the SNP believe an early 20s sex offender cannot be held to account due to age

Honest to Christ @ssd, if you can’t figure out it’s symptomatic of the fact that she’s a lying wee shite then there’s no hope for you.

What about the deeply offensive statements she’s come out with - does that stoke your ire too? Or are your nationalists views too deeply entrenched that you’ll turn a blind eye to everything their second and third rate politicians come out with?

MichelleScarn · 05/07/2023 19:01

How could MB held accountable for what she did/said at her young age remember?!

readsalotgirl63 · 05/07/2023 19:40

People can speak as they wish but to pretend to be a chip shop fryer when actually you're a university student from a pretty middle class background is not only hypocritical and dishonest but insulting

Aaron95 · 05/07/2023 20:11

Dente · 04/07/2023 22:26

She also allegedly took coke in the Houses of Parliament.

She is the worst.

I rather suspect you would struggle to find many MPs who hadn't.

There is still a snuff box outside the chamber and every day someone has the job of refilling it. Why - because tradition apparently.

ssd · 05/07/2023 22:04

Maybe she worked in a chippy at uni? Nothing unusual there. Maybe she's talking like her pals talk rather than her neighbours when she grew up? I don't know either way, i just hate the assumption you should talk a certain way if you're from a certain area. My kids don't talk the same as their pals but grew up in the same place.

Anyway, i don't really know enough about MB to have an indepth discussion here, other than a recent speech in the house of commons i agreed

I’m sure you must have an opinion on the things she’s said that have been highlighted on here - you don’t need to have an in-depth discussion, just an acknowledgment that her behaviour has been hugely offensive and completely inappropriate for a politician - even an SNP one.

readsalotgirl63 · 05/07/2023 22:14

She did work in a chippy while at uni or before she went to uni but I don't think she should continue to describe herself as a chipshop worker when she was clearly not going to be doing that for the rest of her life.

If (great big if) she does go back to that then I would think much more of her. However it is far more likely that she will line herself up as an MSP and will continue to ride the gravy train.

Perhaps I'm just tired of having worked nearly 40 years in local govt for much less than she's getting and don't have much sympathy for her being "tired".

Whoiscomingtosaveyou · 05/07/2023 22:16

IncomingTraffic · 04/07/2023 19:19

The thing is, when she first got elected it was all a ‘gaun yersel, hen’ thing because she was young.

Now she’s just an aggressive nearly 30 year old who hasn’t got much to offer.

Probably prime candidate for First Minister then..

ssd · 05/07/2023 22:18

Thats fair enough @readsalotgirl63, i didn't realise she said she was still doing that once she'd left uni.

readsalotgirl63 · 05/07/2023 22:30

Appreciate that @ssd. She was actually elected to parliament about a month before she finished her degree so the only "job" she has had is as an MP.

During her parliamentary career she has described herself as a chipshop worker and has both played down her middle class background and exaggerated her accent and the claims to be an "ordinary worker".

I just have no time for people who pretend to be something they are not.

ssd · 05/07/2023 22:33

Yes, that would annoy me too.

IncomingTraffic · 05/07/2023 22:43

It’s the act that annoys people.

I am undeniably ‘posh Glasgow’. There are people I went to school with (at a school everyone would recognise as ‘posh Scottish state school’) who decided in the mid to late 90s to pretend they were working class. Their very senior solicitor parents had been paying for elocution lessons only for them to pretend they spoke like some parody of a ‘schemie’ (as one of my friends at the time noted). It’s annoying because it’s so disingenuous.

Mhairi Black is pulling the same kind of shit, because she thinks it will get her where she wants to be. With added SNP-approved-tartan-cladding to make it more annoying.

We should expect better of our politicians. it’s no better than boris Johnson’s posh buffoon act. Just a different kind of bullshit to fool the electorate.

IncomingTraffic · 05/07/2023 22:46

I didn’t have elocution lessons by the way. And I was on the ‘poor kid’ end of my schools social spectrum. Which actually made that crap more annoying.

My parents grew up very much not posh Glasgow and worked bloody hard to give their kids the opportunity to go to school with posh kids who wanted to pretend to be ‘common people’. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Being better than boris is a Very Low Bar indeed.

I mean… if that’s the best defence anyone can muster.

MichelleScarn · 06/07/2023 05:05

Am sure have seen it asked but is 'better than Boris' the new Godwins law? You can't mention snp wrongs without a 'but they're not Boris..'

ssd · 06/07/2023 08:33

Boris Johnson has definitely done more for Scottish independence than any Scottish politician ever could. The thought of a tory win at the next GE is enough to make me want independence. I know the snp are tory lite, but I'm hoping that Labour will become the predominant
socialist party in Scotland again if we ever become independent. Though that might just be a dream just now. Certainly the snp have had their day, but there doesn't seem to be any other party able to topple them so far. But i definitely feel with what's been happening with the current shower in Westminster, people are repulsed by them and would vote yes just to be free of them. That, and the constant upselling of the royal family, and the money spent on coronations etc etc just feels so wrong in this day and age, with the country on its knees.

Oh ha ha. The SNP are far more repulsive than the Tories.

Your "argument" is one often latched on to by separatists - the "we need separatism to avoid that nasty Tory government in London". It's nonsense - Boris was there a few years - separatism would be permanent and pointless.

IncomingTraffic · 06/07/2023 08:42

I’m not sure it matters who is worse. We could just agree they’re both dreadful.

The SNP have been using the ‘oh but the uk government are worse’ shield for far too long. It doesn’t matter how bad the Tories are. The SNP have not seized the opportunity to demonstrate what good government could look like. They’ve been shite and not cared because they can just point at Westminster and say ‘but boris…’

mummywithtwokidsplusdog · 06/07/2023 08:44

I am not a MB fan as cannot abide how little she has done for her constituents. She appears to love mouthing off in the limelight but not actually doing the boring unseen work. Her fake working class act is grating and disrespectful. Her attitude seems pretty toxic so I’m surprised she’s not a fan of continuing to (poorly) attend Westminster! Cannot entertain thinking about her at holy rood but she has no life experience other than being a politician so it seems likely?
