Really really small

IamNannyPlum · 28/04/2023 13:57

It’s very small and to be honest there are nicer places in Morayshire, but it is cheap. There is a nice community feel and the people are generally nice.

dementedpixie · 28/04/2023 14:02

I thought you were going to ask about Buckfast tonic wine 🤣

JaneJeffer · 28/04/2023 18:04

Grin I have no idea why I clicked on this thread but the title intrigued me!

ElsieSpanner · 28/04/2023 18:31

I've never been but it reminds me of a parody cooking series on YouTube that used to crack me up, starring Dodie McMuckie who hailed from Buckie

TheYearOfSmallThings · 28/04/2023 18:33

Yeah, I thought we were all going to get buckied too.

Dontopenthetrapdoor · 28/04/2023 21:22

It's very small and not well served by public transport. It can get cut off by snow in winter.

There is a strong community for those who have lived there for generations however it can be difficult for those who move into the area to be included.

If you buy a house there it can be difficult to sell it if you want to leave.

There are lovely beaches near by, and dolphins and seals to see regularly. Good coffee shops and ice cream parlours. The schools are quite mixed. The high school SEN department used to be very well regarded but I'm not sure what it is like now.

HowDoYouDoWhatYouDoToMeIWishIKnew · 28/04/2023 21:27

I know many people who live there.

They are either generations deep and will never move away, or they are desperate to get out.

I wouldn't move there, it's very cliquey. There are far nicer places nearby.

I thought it was going to be about Buckfast too. Very disappointed.

EsmeShelby · 28/04/2023 21:38

School is not great. Town is dying. Good area if you're religious. Beaches are nice.

Aurignacian · 28/04/2023 22:12

I have relatives who live there. It’s a nice friendly place, quite close knit-I seem to remember that it has the highest number of residents in Scotland that remain in their home town. You need to drive, transport links are awful. Lovely countryside and coast. I don’t know about schools. House prices are very reasonable.

Me too lol 🍷

Dontopenthetrapdoor · 29/04/2023 14:48

If I had to choose between Buckie and Rothes I would opt for Buckie as at least it has a Tesco, nursery and a couple of schools. In Rothes you would be absolutely trapped if you didn't have a car. I wouldn't be keen to live in either though. If you're looking for lower cost places to live in Moray I would suggest looking at Lhanbryde. It has a good school, a great co-op, you can easily cycle into Elgin, or the bus runs through there frequently as it's on the main A96.

I know people who live there. That's pretty much my experience

MorrisZapp · 29/04/2023 18:02

What's the difference between a lottery winner and a Moray fishing vessel?

Well one's a Buckie lugger and the other's a... 😂

RaraRachael · 29/04/2023 18:26

Loads of new houses being built but town centre is dying on its arse and there is a dire need for more infrastructure to cope with all these new residents.
Reasonably well served by buses. Plenty of nice walks around the area.
It has one of the highest rates of personalised number plate ownership and there are lots of entitled people who have to have a new house, car, holiday etc.
Contrary to what a PP said, it very rarely is affected by bad snow - twice in the last 13 years.
It claims to have great community spirit but there are still a lot of people who don't let the truth get in the way of making up a good story.

WhatthehellisplanB · 29/04/2023 18:31

I'm from Moray. We have a saying in my town 'why did god not go to Buckie? Cos he couldn't find a wise man or a virgin.
And that pretty much sums Buckie up. If you're not from there or not a fisher family, don't bother.
Rothes in the other hand is nice but as a pp said you do need a car.
There are far nicer places in Moray, Lhanbryde/Urquhart or even Fochabers/Mosstodloch if you're wanting that area.
