Hotel and dinner recommendations

It’s our 25th anniversary in the summer and I’d like to book a night away. I thought of the Balmoral in Edinburgh but like Gleneagles, they want £850 bed and breakfast. I like the idea of a good restaurant within the hotel but don’t want to spend that kind of money. If it was that amount, it would need to be a really good dinner and drinks included.

Im not sure where is good to eat in Edinburgh these days. Obviously plenty of cheaper hotel options there too. Has anyone been to Six by Nico?

We live in rural Perthshire. Fonab Castle is a possibility but any other suggestions for hotel and restaurant or a restaurant and I can look at a hotel separately? Don’t want to spend all day traveling. Just thought about Cameron House too.

Ballathie house is lovely. Small hotel and you can ask for rooms in the old part of the hotel which is quite grand. It is in kinclaven.

This place is nice but maybe too near where you stay/ too informal.
There are so many places to eat out at in Edinburgh. Again it probably depends if you are looking for just somewhere relaxed with excellent food. Or whether you want somewhere “posher “ to make it feel more like an occasion.
In the former category the Raeburn in Stockbridge is a nice relaxed hotel in Stockbridge in Edinburgh. It’s right opposite the Scran and Scallie. Which sounds like it serves regular pub grub - but the food is really amazing .

The Scotsman Hotel in Edinburgh is lovely. The Dome restaurant in Edinburgh is amazing.

Happy 25th anniversary 🥳 hope you have a lovely time.

Been to six by nico twice, really enjoyed but it’s not really romantic/special atmospherically.

What about the Bonham hotel, small boutique & gorgeous.

witchery for a meal?

motherstongue · 27/03/2023 19:41

How about a restaurant with rooms? The Peat Inn near Anstruther, Champany Inn by Linlithgow or The Bonny Badger in Gullane all spring to mind.

Also, there’s Fingal in Edinburgh which is the boat anchored in Leith. Been there for dinner and afternoon tea, both fab.

PoBaFla · 27/03/2023 19:43

I would agree Six by Nico is good but not special.

What about the George, the Printing press restaurant is good.
Tiger lily, or Greywalls or Archerfield in East Lothian?

RicciardoPerez · 27/03/2023 19:49

What about Norton house hotel? Also just along from the tram too

Newusernames · 27/03/2023 19:54

Not Edinburgh but we had a fantastic stay at Glenapp Castle. Lovely rooms and superb food!

Badbudgeter · 27/03/2023 20:05

Prestonfield house hotel in Edinburgh is lovely. Owned by the same people as the Witchery so food is always lovely too.

Pammela · 27/03/2023 20:07

Archerfield is the most gorgeous spa with an amazing restaurant- not too far from Edinburgh.

ClosedAuraOpenMind · 27/03/2023 20:13

the Witchery in Edinburgh is fab, if pricey

heidbuttsupper · 27/03/2023 20:27

Came to say the Witchery and also the Waldorf Astoria in Edinburgh

Hullobaby · 27/03/2023 20:39

How about Cromlix House? It's lovely. We stayed there recently. Also as pp said Ballathie House was lovely last time I went but that was a while ago.

Fonab Castle is nice but a bit glitzy for me as prefer a bit more traditional style.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 27/03/2023 20:47

I like six by Nico, but agree with others that it doesn't give off a special occasion vibe. I'm not a huge fan of the Witchery tbh, I've had amazing food at Fhior though.

The Bonham hotel is lovely and hotel du vin is nice. I'd throw my budget at the food, but we're big fans of eating out!

Inglewood House and Spa in Alloa is lovely. Lots of gorgeous walka on your doorstep, the spa itself and some shopping at Sterling Furniture and Home store could be a really nice weekend.

Belindabelle · 28/03/2023 18:04

I came on to say Prestonfield.

I prefer a country house hotel vibe rather than a city break. I love Gleneagles and have stayed there a few times but I don’t think it’s worth the price now.

A few more to consider are Monachyle Mhor, Rufflets, Greywalls.

Last summer I stayed at the Marine in North Berwick and had a great time but the weather was amazing and I love NB. There is also a hotel in Troon by the same company if you fancy a seaside location.

twinklelight · 29/03/2023 14:56

The Peat Inn, they recently had a good itison deal. May still be available

Cazziebo · 30/03/2023 00:18

We had a night in the Peat Inn recently. It was very special but not far off Gleneagles prices (didn't know about Itison - must keep an eye out!)

Victoria Square in Stirling is amazing and the restaurant (The Orangery) serves fabulous food. Nice drawing room for pre and post dinner drinks. It's in the town but looks out to the castle on one side and a grassy square on the other.

The new Virgin hotel in India Buildings gets great reviews, doesn't seem too stupidly priced compared to some, the bar looks amazing - it is a beautiful building

ProseccoOnIce · 30/03/2023 18:32

Rufflets in St Andrews is lovely.
