sqa exams 2023

So only about 2 months til the final exams so starting a thread to discuss revision, exams etc.

Have any schools released details of easter revision classes yet? I've heard nothing from our school and don't know if they are doing any. If they aren't, I might look at what else is on offer over easter.

He took five subjects in total in S5 - one was an advanced higher, the rest were highers.

Chompiemompie · 03/05/2023 17:19

so...... how did they find maths. DD came straight home and has been in her room crying. i havent really had a chance to speak to her as i am at work but doesnt look good!

itsalwayscycling · 03/05/2023 17:30

In my sons words ‘horrible’ - felt it was much, much harder than any of the past papers and even those of his mates who got high 90s in their prelims didn’t come out feeling confident of an A.

Igneococcus · 03/05/2023 17:54

ds is also very unhappy with his math exam.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 03/05/2023 17:56

Bless them, hope the higher tomorrow is Ok!

for what it’s worth my son didn’t think he’d done well last year, he said there was a worked version of the paper online afterwards and he thought he’d got about 68%. He got an A band 1 so over 85% so he’d seriously underestimated x

they will have done better than they think x

If she wants to study a subject that requires maths (maths, engineering, medicine) then she should study maths not application of maths.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 03/05/2023 18:01

My older son is doing higher maths (and hopefully advanced higher next year) and my younger one will be doing N5 apps of maths. He has autism and his teacher says apps is the right choice. He’s unlikely to progress to university at least not straight from school. The hope currently is he’ll do apps in s4 and maths in s5. I was not amazing at maths but managed to scrape an A at higher, it’s good there’s an option now at Nat 5 that ticks the maths box (although not for maths-y based courses) but is not at theoretical as actual maths.

NicolaSturGONE · 03/05/2023 18:18

aw, what a shame your kids found it hard.
My DD says N5 Maths paper 1 was "a godsend" and "so easy". Paper 2 was a bit harder but she thinks she's passed it.
DD has always enjoyed Maths. She hates English and has a tutor for that though.

weebarra · 03/05/2023 18:19

I agree. DS1 isn't great at maths but apps seems to be ok for him. He's planning to do 5 highers next year so isn't daft but does struggle with maths. I wish I'd had the opportunity to do a numerical subject that wasn't higher maths, I got a D!

name985 · 03/05/2023 18:25

Is it really necessary to emphasise how easy your child found the paper when others found it difficult? A parent of a child crying in their room prob doesn't need to read a direct quote saying it was a 'Godsend' ...

NicolaSturGONE · 03/05/2023 18:32

Oh fuck off.

She asked how did they find it, and I replied. You'll also see that I expressed sympathy and mentioned that my DD struggles with English.

If you look at the whole fucking thread, and previous threads about exams, you'll see lots of posts about what our kids enjoy and don't.

Once again, I do hope her daughter is okay and has done better than she thinks.

IMO no one should feel ashamed, be censored, or their threads picked apart for wording if their child feels they did well. There will be a wide range of abilities and experiences and everyone should feel able to share theirs.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 03/05/2023 18:39

Grade boundary for a C at Nat5 last year was 39% so hopefully most of the kids of parents on here will have done OK x

GottoHandit · 03/05/2023 18:45

My DD found it quite hard and was stumped by a few questions (one with a clock face in particular?) Her best mate who goes to a different school found it quite easy but then, as my DD readily admits, her friend has always been brilliant at maths. Horses for courses let’s try and not come to blows about it all, we’re not even half way through yet 😂

We haven’t even started yet 😭

Survey99 · 03/05/2023 18:48

Twitter seems to be saying Paper 1 was ok and Paper 2 had a few tough questions. One mentioned the Clock question too.

Chompiemompie · 03/05/2023 18:55

please dont come to blows over my dd :-) She will do great in some subjects and not others - thats the way it goes. maths is a toughie though as she needs it for future options so if she fails - a resit is on the cards which means she will have to do one less higher. Lets hope she got enough.
Spoken to her friends mums and all of them found it v hard - even the ones for whom maths is one of their stronger subjects. 2 girls in the year had panic attacks during it so that unsettled the others.

I'm still in work but spoken with DD. I think her upset earlier is partly linked to being poorly and we are still monitoring her coeliac disease in case she is starting a flare up. Shes now focusing on English - her next one and one that she feels good about given all her marks to date and the high marks in prelims.

Its a bleeding roller coaster!

spiderplantparty · 03/05/2023 19:01

My DC found maths "OK". We are just hoping for a pass, whatever a C is with the grade boundaries, otherwise it'll be a resit next year.

NicolaSturGONE · 03/05/2023 19:16

Did your DD tell any teacher on the day she was experiencing a flare up? If she does fail, I'm sure its free to appeal, especially if there's extenuating circumstances (sp?) and if she did better in the prelim.

Poor thing, netflix and chill tonight!

Chompiemompie · 03/05/2023 19:28

@NicolaSturGONE i let the school know at 3.30am and emailed the year head again at 6am. they have been so supportive of her since diagnosis and know the impact on her. i have an appt booked for the doctor tomorrow even though there is nothing that can be done to help dd at this stage- we will just have to ride it out for next few days. she cant take a night off as if it is a flare up, she will literally sleep for days and lose her revision time for other subjects. she wants to try and get some done incase. we will know by tonight if it is.

hope everyone else's kids are ok.
what on the timetable for the rest of the week?

Noontimes · 03/05/2023 19:43

I think all kids seem to have found Nat 5 maths hard, esp paper 2. Just remember that the pass marks will probably be adapted accordingly.

Sturmundcalm · 03/05/2023 22:10

DS seemed ok with N5 maths - don't tend to get much detail from him but he was fairly upbeat. and with geography he mentioned not managing to answer a question but didn't say anything like that for today. my friend's DD apparently found it hellish though so who knows!

Bluepeach · 04/05/2023 03:01

I think the emotion can be the result of a lot of things, and not necessarily an accurate reflection on how they did. Two years ago when my son did nat 5 he came out of the English exam in tears saying he'd failed it and he'd actually got 90 something percent and his friend came out saying it was easy and got a C. In his case it was his very first exam (although in covid all sat in formal exam conditions) and I just think it was the release of stress that made him so emotional.

NicolaSturGONE · 04/05/2023 06:02

DDs teacher sent them the Maths exam papers with solutions last night, if anyone wants a copy, PM me, if it would help reassure their kids in any way.
DD has spotted two questions she got wrong, but thinks / hopes, she'll still get some marks for the working. She is confident of a pass. Fingers crossed.

Ds is away in for Higher Maths today. Good luck to anyone else sitting exams today
