So only about 2 months til the final exams so starting a thread to discuss revision, exams etc.

Have any schools released details of easter revision classes yet? I've heard nothing from our school and don't know if they are doing any. If they aren't, I might look at what else is on offer over easter.

If it was his strongest subject then it might also have been the one he had the highest expectations of himself for?

Rae36 · 02/05/2023 20:31

Aww bless him @libertyfabric exams are such a shit way of showing what some kids are capable of. I know they suit others though so I don't know what the right answer is.

Ds messed up a bit in Higher History, despite being reminded time and time again to spend 45 minutes on each essay he ran out of time and couldn't finish the one on the topic he knows best. I'm sad for him, annoyed with him, frustrated with and for him....

It's such a tricky time for us all, parents and kids.

Ds3 has his first exam, higher maths, on Thursday so it’s all quiet here at the moment.

I just wanted to say I know how disappointing it is for everyone if they don’t get good results or don’t do as well as you know they could but this is not the be all and end all that we sometimes feel it is. Both ds1 (27) and ds2 (25) were disappointed with their results especially ds1, who had an upset before his highers, got an A for music and failed everything else. He’d always been quite academic so everyone was shocked and he didn’t really do as well as he could have done in sixth year either. They both have their degrees, good jobs and are happy now so there is more than one way for them to get where they want to go.

RollOnJune23 · 02/05/2023 21:24

That's nice to hear, @Threeboysadogandacat

weebarra · 02/05/2023 21:41

@Chompiemompie - DS1 said the same about the poison gas question! He said that they'd only ever had two slides on it.

Chompiemompie · 02/05/2023 22:02

@Threeboysadogandacat
I was a high achiever a through school and predicted 3 As at level. There was so much pressure on me that I crumbled and got c, d, d. I thought my life and future was over but it put me on a different path and was a tough life lesson which helped give me perspective.
I think this chort of young people have had it tough. We have made lots of summer plans with dd so she can have a great break and we'll deal with whatever arrives on the 8th August.

Totally agree, I got 5 As and was off to Glasgow to do a law degree after s5. Has it translated into making me mega rich with a glittering career? Has it shite, but I’ve got a job I love and I’m happy, life got in the way from when I was 17. It so isn’t the be all and end all, although I appreciate it feels that way at 17.

Its a shame they can't seemingly take the question paper home like in my day (god, that makes me sound old 😂) but it would enable me to check!

Haha I know! My son looked at me like I had 2 heads when I asked him last year if he got the paper home. I remember the teachers standing outside the exam hall to get it off is when I was at school!

Thank you. He spoke to pupil support & guidance who apparently calmed him down enough to go back in and they gave him the 20 mins back at the end - he's in separate accommodation for exam anxiety anyway. I'm gutted though as this was his strongest subject - target A grade, although I'm obviously being supportive and not showing him how I feel.

Bless him. I’m sure he’s done better than he thinks. Exams were marked more generously last year and I’m sure it’ll be the same this year.

spiderplantparty · 02/05/2023 22:43

DC said history went OK today. Managed the timing much better than in the prelim and seemed pretty happy with how it had gone. Maths tomorrow and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for that.

Chompiemompie · 03/05/2023 07:06

Morning all.
Maths today, dds worst subject and she has been up all night ill. She has coeliac disease and I think she was glutened yesterday - it usually starts like this. I really hope not as it tends to put her out of action for about a week.
She wants to go in but she looks awful.
😭

NicolaSturGONE · 03/05/2023 07:59

Maths is one of DDs best subject so hopefully it goes okay tomorrow. Then she can relax until English and I think Chemistry next week.

@NicolaSturGONE maths Nat 5 is this morning, not tomorrow? Hopefully that was just a typo!

NicolaSturGONE · 03/05/2023 08:03

yes sorry, still half asleep. its today not tomorrow lol

Good luck to everyone for maths today! DS1 is only doing Maths Apps so has a day off!

spiderplantparty · 03/05/2023 08:17

Just waved DC off to nat 5 maths. Fingers crossed as this is one of the weaker subjects.

Igneococcus · 03/05/2023 08:56

Just dropped ds off at school. Math is the exam he is most nervous about.

Bluepeach · 03/05/2023 11:44

Can I ask if Maths and Applications of Maths hold the same weight at Higher. My daughter is about to make her choices for Higher and certainly finds Maths a lot easier and more enjoyable when it is framed in a real life context. However, I just wondered if they are considered equal. Thanks

If she wants to study a subject that requires maths (maths, engineering, medicine) then she should study maths not application of maths.

Bluepeach · 03/05/2023 11:53

Yes, I should have said what she wants to study - law - so doesn't necessarily needs maths but also wants to make sure she has an 'academic' profile.

Probably best to check with universities as Applications of Maths Higher is quite new. Edinburgh lists it as an accepted subject generally so it would depend on the course. I would think it would be fine for Law but always best checking yourself.

My son studied both maths and applications of maths at Nat 5 and higher level and was the first year to do this. He found applications quite easy although he is a natural mathematician. He also enjoyed the project. For Nat 5 he did applications along with maths in the same timetabled five periods and managed fine. I believe some unis do not give it an equal weighting compared to maths particularly for maths heavy courses.

Shelefttheweb · 03/05/2023 14:05

If you take maths and applications you will probably find universities will only count one.

Aurea · 03/05/2023 14:12

@Shelefttheweb

My DS applied to uni this year and has an unconditional offer from Edinburgh uni for an integrated masters in computer science and also an offer from Durham for an MEng (he has firmed Edinburgh and redrawn from the rest). He also had a Cambridge interview with this combination of two maths. The duplication of maths hasn't been an issue, for him at least and universities like applicants of mathematical subjects to study as much maths as possible.

Is he only taking three other Highers?
