Who do you want to see as new First Minister?

And who do you think it'll be if they are different?

Not seen any threads on this yet!

My two cents -

I voted SNP when I was very young (Salmond) and under the impression they were a kinda catch-all working man's party who didn't do much to offend the left or right, but I stopped voting for them ages ago and recently started to actively despise them.

Normally I'm the polar opposite of the Reddit consensus and they seem to want Robertson but only, it seems, because they can't have Mhari Black (which is one MP I DO know and absolutely cannot stand). I feel like Forbes is the only one who'd bring them back to the centre and increase membership as she might attract everyone who left back.

So I suppose I'm a toss-up between Forbes who might pull them away from their more (imho) farcical policies and Black who might finally start to kill them dead in the water.

I do believe Sturgeon resigned because the recent polling data (where ALL age demographics agreed with the WM overturn including a large amount of SNP membership) showed that people vote SNP despite their progressive policies and not because of them. I reckon they knew it would really hurt them at the next election, and since she can't U-turn, the only thing left to do was step aside and let a new leader shift their direction.

I'm interested to know what people on here think though.

The EU was definitely a big topic but you're right, it was about how we'd be forced out - lots of discussion about how Spain would reject our application and how we'd have to use the Euro.

Well no, wasn't it mostly the reverse, that we were told independence would mean having to leave the EU - and then it happened anyway, though not because of Scottish votes.

Scottish votes were part of Brexit. Over a million people in Scotland voted for Brexit. If two-thirds of those had voted remain then the overall outcome would have been remain.

@BigBoysDontCry Wonderful news and about time too really. Bet Nippy is going to be pretty shy about being near a TV camera this week for a change.

@Lovinmyblanket correct - they tried to gloss over the whole EU membership aspect until the NO campaign highlighted that independence means leaving the EU immediately - with no deal of any form & no quick route back in.
Didn't Slimy Salmond even come out at one point and claim he'd "talked to the Europe and they said it was fine we could just stay"?
Didn't seem to be an issue for most separatists unit it was what England wanted in 2016 then suddenly it was an issue for them.

I think it is the sister part of the brother sister owned bus company that might rhyme with Beige Poach

This story might shed some light

The party would be better served by getting all of this stuff out in the open and starting fresh instead of trying to ram in the mighty humza to try to keep it under wraps. The media and others would be best served by focusing on one or two out of the masses of issues at a time. Make a list and start working through it. There is a danger of working on too many fronts and not allocating each scandal the time and attention they need. Keep doing the ground work in the background and be ready to go on each one in turn until the party is broken.

Is it too much to ask for a parliament that reflects the thoughts, dreams and wishes of the whole of Scotland? I also think every vote should be a free vote where the representatives could vote based on what is best for their constituents.

BishopRock · 26/02/2023 13:38

It's a real failure of leadership to have no one with sufficient experience and gravitas who could take over.

However, I wouldn't want any of the current leaders as FM, so it's obviously n all round issue in the Scottish Parliament.

When you a prioritising candidates because they have long term mental health problems, that significantly impair their day to day functioning, over ability, gravitas, and integrity then what do you expect?

It's not a great situation when I don't know which candidate you are referring to as it could honestly be any of them.

It is SNP policy to prioritise selection of list candidates with self-declared disabilities, including mental health disabilities.

In a rare moment reality bit.

How did she not notice this before?

BigBoysDontCry · 26/02/2023 18:15

Ah yes, see what you meant now. I thought you were talking specifics about the current leadership candidates. Surely it's always best policy to select the correct person for the job whilst ensuring equality of opportunity.

I have DC with a disability currently looking for a job, what he is finding is that they ask for "requirements" that aren't really required for the role which his disability means he is going to struggle with. Aside from that he'd be a great candidate for all the key elements.

Shelefttheweb · 26/02/2023 19:51

If a disabled candidate could make the best MSP then they absolutely should go at the top of the list, but that wasn’t what happened. Suspicion was it was to keep others off the list.

The former Chief Constable who recently announced his departure I presume.

QuackMooOink · 26/02/2023 20:56

Ah yes of course! Sorry I’m being bit dense tonight. Thanks

BigBoysDontCry · 26/02/2023 20:56

Basically the initials of the characters are correct.

QuackMooOink · 26/02/2023 21:13

Yes I think I figures the others out (with help from the link to the news report also above) but that had me stumped (very obvious now you’ve said!!)

Who wrote it? Is there likely to be truth to it. I feel reading just the headlines news I’m really missing something!! Like the whole resignation was odd given week before was saying hadn’t reached point NZ Pm had etc etc. I feel there is a a big puzzle piece I’m missing here 😳This thread is good and interesting for someone in Scotland who hasn’t really delved below surface headlines for a while.

BigBoysDontCry · 26/02/2023 21:26

Yep it takes a bit to get your head around but twitter busy saying something big is coming out tomorrow. Fingers crossed for something that blasts at the foundations of the corruption.

QuackMooOink · 26/02/2023 21:28

i don’t have twitter so missed this all. Will be interested to see what’s reported in papers tomorrow then. Def something suss with it all.
