Confused about relocation

Hi there,

I am a mum of 11 year old son, husband got an opportunity to work here in biocity for pharmaceutical company, hence relocating from India. Can someone guide me about choosing between Airdrie, Coatbridge, hamilton, Motherwell & Shawlands for accommodation? Everyone is saying there are rough areas and good areas but problem is nobody telling about rough areas specifically. also school rating is variable. I would love to stay nearby mix communities (which I believe there are in Hamilton & motherwell & shawlands but not many in coatbridge & Airdrie) so kiddo has no problem in gelling up in school plus friendly locality for family environment. Any advise would be helpful.

Regards,
Vrushali

Is this a permanent move? When is your child 12 ? Is it high school you'll be looking for, looking to buy or rent and budget? Easier to advice then

None of them are good areas, with the exception of possibly Shawlands.

Out of the others, at a push I would say Hamilton.

Why have those areas been shortlisted? There are much better areas to live in.

Without knowing details I would say East Renfrewshire, East Dunbartonshire, Jordanhill / Scotstoun.

Hi Currently looking for rental one. and budget is not a problem but these areas except Shawlands are near to Biocity hence easier for daily commute. My child will 12 in october so I suppose he will go to P7 currently? is this correct?

Dalziel in Motherwell has a good reputation as far as schools go, so if Motherwell get one near there. Hamilton is fine but recommend Earnock, ferniegair types of areas. I'd avoid Coatbridge but only based on limited knowledge! Round the south side of Glasgow or West End is nice and the commute isn't too bad.

Yes, P7 moving to high school after summer. Hamilton you have the Grammar or Holy Cross. know children at both who are doing well

Avoid Airdrie, Coatbridge and Motherwell.
There will be nice parts to them but generally they are considered to be fairly deprived areas,

If you're looking for diverse communities with good high schools then Shawlands or West End in Glasgow will be your best bet

Of those areas I’d definitely say Shawlands. Of the other areas Hamilton is the only one I’d consider. Personally if never move to Motherwell or Coatbridge. Bothwell is quite nice.

Lifeisapeach · 08/02/2023 20:42

I think Shawlands is too far to commute to Biocity. Motherwell is your closest decent area and as someone said above, Dalziel high in Motherwell has the best reputation out of other local schools. the catchment area is quite tight though so best check that with transport links too.

hamilton is a bit further from biocity than Motherwell so I would say Motherwell is a good option for you.

Marmalady75 · 08/02/2023 22:20

Biocity is just off the M8, so I’d look further east along it. There are some nice West Lothian towns not that far away. Personally I’d avoid a lot of the areas you have mentioned unless you have been to visit as there are good and bad areas.

Gingersay · 09/02/2023 15:35

There's no public transport to Biocity other than small local buses that stop early evening so unless you can drive it will have quite local. Our Lady's in Cumbernauld is a good school which is not to far from Biocity.
From your list I would go Motherwell or Airdrie having lived in both there are lovely areas in either.
Motherwell areas to avoid are forgewood, Muirhouse and Jerviston.
Airdrie areas to avoid are Craigneuk, Thrashbush, Whinhall and Plains.
