Perth Hotel Fire

So sad to hear about the hotel fire where three adults and a dog have died.

Looking at the hotel reviews, I’m just livid this place wasn’t shut down.

The pictures are telling enough, but if you filter the reviews on ‘fire’ there are shocking reviews of corridor lights not working, a labyrinth layout, blocked fire exits, fire signs not lit up, piles of rubbish etc. Not to mention smoking being tolerated in the rooms, and staff ignoring fire alarms. Just horrendous that it was allowed to continue to operate.

Hopefully this prompts tighter regulation - after two hotel fires with fatalities in recent years, something needs done.

Wow, those reviews are properly awful

PineapplePear · 02/01/2023 23:09

I honestly can’t believe that in this day and age it’s possible to run a hotel so badly. Owner deserves a jail sentence.

I stayed in this hotel about 30 years ago. The upper floors were accessed via a narrow spiral staircase with no obvious alternate way out in the event of an emergency. It was like a rabbit warren on the top floor.

I think it’s one thing having these higgledepiggedly layouts in older residential buildings, but another in a hotel. Why is it allowed? Obviously a massive risk.

The hotel owner has form for running unsafe hotels iwobserver.co.uk/disgusting-grim-state-of-melbourne-ardenlea-hotel-exposed/

I honestly don't understand how a hotel can be left in such a dangerous and disgusting state. It's so incredibly sad that people have died.

The reviews and photos speak for themselves, it was clearly a disaster waiting to happen.

How come hotels aren't checked regularly by environmental health/the local authority? I feel so so sad for those who have died and their families.

TheShellBeach · 02/01/2023 23:56

Wow. I was looking at the pictures of the fire on the News and I thought, just from the outside, that the hotel looked grim.

I am so sorry for the families of the people and dog who died. It was a tragedy waiting to happen, it would seem.

I don't understand how they get to operate. To read the reviews of unsuspecting people booking through booking.com, then getting there and leaving. The place allowed dogs and I can imagine finding alternative accommodation which took dogs would be hard. We had something similar happen to us once.

Those poor people, whatever the circumstances, the place does not appear safe at all

SylviasMotherSaid · 03/01/2023 14:16

One of the reviews specifically mentioned how concerned the reviewer was how anyone would be able to leave the hotel in the event of a fire , photos of light switches hanging off walls , fuse boxes tripping mentioned in other reviews . Poor souls who lost their lives in this horrible event and the dog too .

ChaToilLeam · 03/01/2023 14:21

Horrible, the place should have been shut down long ago. Don’t hotels have to have fire and hygiene inspections?

TinyChancer · 03/01/2023 15:59

I wonder if the dog was an assistance dog and the owner was unable to escape? If so, says a lot about the accessibility of hotels :(

Butchyrestingface · 06/01/2023 16:54

They've just been named, two sisters, poor souls.

PineapplePear · 06/01/2023 17:01

Just horrible, their poor family, also the young father who died.

Ive seen some horrible comments online about the victims likely to be asylum seekers, and it would be their miss-use of facilities that caused the fire. Wonder how they will feel now it’s ‘proper’ Scot’s killed in a hellhole of a hotel.
